GEORGIA PART I Oinoinoati to Cava Oity Louisville and its ExpositionCuriosities and Monstrosities Public Build ings A Bachelor on Beauty Passing over our trip from Northern Ohio to ihe Queen City a few days of sight seeing in the City during the Ex position as already familiar to the gen ajal reader I will begin with my yoy age on the beautiful river We had expected making the trip from Cincinnati to Louisville during daylight but as no boats leave Ciiicin nan earlier than o o clock p m we seemed liable to disappointment But circumstances turned in our favor About nine oclock p in we ran aground at Lawrenceburg Indiana We not off again in half an hour but in a few hours grounded again Theseoccurrences and a dense fog compelled our lying over until morning so that wc missed the scenery of only 40 miles or so of the route About eight oclock next morning the fog lifted the bum shone forth iu his splendor and as we proceeded on our way a delightful view of the surrounding scenery was obtain ed On the right were ihe beautiful hills of Indiana and flliuois crowned with forests or bristling with rockv cliffs Upon the left the suil of Ken tucky lay before us with iis hills nnd plains Ihe river was very low much bo that a man six feet in height could wade it at almost anv point with out wetting his chin Frequentsoundings were taken which on one occasion showed the exceeding shallowness of three and a half feet As the boat drew thirtyone inches there was but little room to spare Early in the day a hen that had beeu confined io a coop on the upper deck escaped from her quarters and was walking about ihe deck pick ing up stray bits and looking at the Bcenerv Apparently Bhe desired a nearer view of the shore for after mak nga mental calculation of the distance which was certainly not less than twelve or fifteen rods she spread her wings and left the boat Sheaccomplished the distance in safety never dropping from the horizontal until she got to shore This for a coop chicken was a remarkable flight According to the time table we were due in Louis e at seven or eight oclock a m but not until four oclock p in did the city come in sight The view obtained of the city as we approached was very fine upon our left lay the city ofLouislle with itB many spires the magnifi cent water works which supply the city in the foreground Upon our right lav the thriving town of JeffersonvilleIndiana connected with Louisville by a bridge ot over oUO feet in length con taining 25 spans resting upon 24 stone piers and which cost over 2000000 Here we began to realize that we were on southern soil Almost the only be ings in sight at the wharf were negroes and mules The two are nearlyinseparable and one encounters them at every turn It is difficult to see what they can all the negroes not the mules find to do to earn a living It reminded me of the darkey who on be ing asked how he managed to subsist ngW aUTh nlesVvelnllffaJgoaU ones li bin den The mules are riven generally in teams of two and four the former tandem But one ine is used which passes along the left do to the mouth of the leader A short Bharp jerk denotes gee and a teady pull haw lho Louisville Industrial Exposition eing in progress of couiBe demanded our attention Here we found anexcellent exhibition though its size did not exceed more than one third that of the one at Cincinnati The art collection though very good did not compare in quality with that at Cincinnati Here we encountered an institution almost peculiar to the State of Kentucky the lottery system A large part of this collection was to be disposed of in a grand drawing to take place in a few weekB There were many articles in building to be disposed of in the same way generally for the benefit ot some charitable institution The floral dis play rivaled that at Cincinnati A no ticeable design in addition to those enumerated in a former letter was a large frame of flowers of many hues enclosing a tine portrait of Washington In the corner devoted to ladies work carving c there was a very fine dis play indeed Io us it was the most interesting department of theexposition In its general featnrea the expo sition of course very much resembled that at Cincinnati and in every depart ment a tasteful and good assortment of articles was to be found But there were a few peculiarities not found in the tormer city Such were the thea er in one corner oi the building where were exhibited upon the stage trained birds mice cats and dogs the bowling alley an ingenious piece of mechauism representing a skating scene in which the figures moved as in life the Punch and Judv show and the two Wild Men of Borneo The latter were real curi osities in their way Their height is three feet six inches weight 43 and 45 pounds respectively age unknown but supposed to be between 50 and 00 years Ihey were discovered swinging lrom branch to branch m the forest of Borneo the only people ever discover ed It is supposed that a tribe of such people dwell in the uuexplored wilds of that island They are rather sparely built but their strength is remarkabl One of them standing behind a man whose weight was 241 pounds and placing his hands upon the mans hips lifted him from the floor and Bet him down three feet away without apparent effort Their attendant said that they never yet had found a man too heavy for them to Hit in this manner We must also add to the above list the tight rope exhibition given each afternoon by Madame Guile in the course of which Bhe walks the rope blindfold going backward and forward dances trundles a wheelbarrow across while blindfolded and finally taking a chair balances herself upon the rope while silting in the chair then rises to her feet upon the chair seat without dis turbing its equlibrium Excellent music was furnished daiiy by Eichorns Band and Orchestra assisted by some of the best vocal talent of the city Leaving the exposition we rambled about the city a little We were very much pleased with its general appearance Its street are wide and well shaded having wid brick or stone sidewalks and being well paved The city contains more tine residences than usually seen in cities of like size and they generally have good sized lawns in front though thewater works furnish a bountiful supply of water to the city yet at about every other street corner strands an oldfashioned long handled wooden pump communicating below with a well of excellent water a welcome sight to the heated and thiiaty pedeBtrian The public buildings are not fine generally The exposition building is a neat and commodious structure Macan leys Theater is a substantial stone building The Court House is a large graniteedifice with Doric portico and columns and coat over 1000000 The City Hall is the most pretentious building in the city aud is very fine It is built of stone and coat S500000 Bv far the handsomest building in theeityis that occupied and owned by theCouriorlonnial It is a massive four Rtory edifice of brick trimmed with sandstone We here began to notice a difference in the forms of speech from those of the north The most marked was thenonpronunciation of the letter r giving it the sound of ah as Moah buttah waitah This habit rentiers theconversation slightly uninlelligibla to one unfamiliar with it but one soon be comes accustomed to it bo much bo that if he is not careful he will find himself involuntarily speaking in the same style Before arriving in the cHv we had heen informed titt we would find the ladies of Louisville more beau ifnl than those of CinoiMtati As a nckeye boy we naturally spurned the tlea hut our curiosity being aroused we made careful observations in order to arrive at the truth of the matter The results of our observation compel us to the conclusion that our informant was correct W e certainly saw a greater number of beautiful women during our stay here than while in Cincinnati though we saw not a few in the lattor city Brunettes Beem to predominate Going to the depot to take the train for Cave City another thing peculiar to the southern states struck my attention Over the door of a room was theinscription Colored Passengers Wailing Room In the depots of ail eouthern cities the same distinction iB made colored persons of both sexeB having a waiting room separate from the whites In some cars also a partition across the middle divides the car into twocompartments one for white the other for colored passengers Leaving Louisville we pass for some miles through aperfectly level and formerly very swampy tract of country Most of the route to Cave City however is through quite a rough country which presents some very beautiful scenery as we wereinformed but as it was dark by the time we reached it we can only speak from hearsay Arrived at Cavo City at nine oclock in the evening Here we stop ped on lor the night proposing on the morrow a visit to Mammoth Cave teu miles west This visit we made and will endeavor to give some description of the beauties of the cave in onr next J W II Atlanta Ga Oct 23 1870 High Priced Butter Dairymen often wonder how trip from Northern Ohio to ihe Queen City a few days of sight seeing in the City during the Ex position as already familiar to the gen ajal reader I will begin with my yoy age on the beautiful river We had expected making the trip from Cincinnati to Louisville during daylight but as no boats leave Ciiicin nan earlier than o o clock p m we seemed liable to disappointment But circumstances turned in our favor About nine oclock p in we ran aground at Lawrenceburg Indiana We not off again in half an hour but in a few hours grounded again Theseoccurrences and a dense fog compelled our lying over until morning so that wc missed the scenery of only 40 miles or so of the route About eight oclock next morning the fog lifted the bum shone forth iu his splendor and as we proceeded on our way a delightful view of the surrounding scenery was obtain ed On the right were ihe beautiful hills of Indiana and flliuois crowned with forests or bristling with rockv cliffs Upon the left the suil of Ken tucky lay before us with iis hills nnd plains Ihe river was very low much bo that a man six feet in height could wade it at almost anv point with out wetting his chin Frequentsoundings were taken which on one occasion showed the exceeding shallowness of three and a half feet As the boat drew thirtyone inches there was but little room to spare Early in the day a hen that had beeu confined io a coop on the upper deck escaped from her quarters and was walking about ihe deck pick ing up stray bits and looking at the Bcenerv Apparently Bhe desired a nearer view of the shore for after mak nga mental calculation of the distance which was certainly not less than twelve or fifteen rods she spread her wings and left the boat Sheaccomplished the distance in safety never dropping from the horizontal until she got to shore This for a coop chicken was a remarkable flight According to the time table we were due in Louis e at seven or eight oclock a m but not until four oclock p in did the city come in sight The view obtained of the city as we approached was very fine upon our left lay the city ofLouislle with itB many spires the magnifi cent water works which supply the city in the foreground Upon our right lav the thriving town of JeffersonvilleIndiana connected with Louisville by a bridge ot over oUO feet in length con taining 25 spans resting upon 24 stone piers and which cost over 2000000 Here we began to realize that we were on southern soil Almost the only be ings in sight at the wharf were negroes and mules The two are nearlyinseparable and one encounters them at every turn It is difficult to see what they can all the negroes not the mules find to do to earn a living It reminded me of the darkey who on be ing asked how he managed to subsist ngW aUTh nlesVvelnllffaJgoaU ones li bin den The mules are riven generally in teams of two and four the former tandem But one ine is used which passes along the left do to the mouth of the leader A short Bharp jerk denotes gee and a teady pull haw lho Louisville Industrial Exposition eing in progress of couiBe demanded our attention Here we found anexcellent exhibition though its size did not exceed more than one third that of the one at Cincinnati The art collection though very good did not compare in quality with that at Cincinnati Here we encountered an institution almost peculiar to the State of Kentucky the lottery system A large part of this collection was to be disposed of in a grand drawing to take place in a few weekB There were many articles in building to be disposed of in the same way generally for the benefit ot some charitable institution The floral dis play rivaled that at Cincinnati A no ticeable design in addition to those enumerated in a former letter was a large frame of flowers of many hues enclosing a tine portrait of Washington In the corner devoted to ladies work carving c there was a very fine dis play indeed Io us it was the most interesting department of theexposition In its general featnrea the expo sition of course very much resembled that at Cincinnati and in every depart ment a tasteful and good assortment of articles was to be found But there were a few peculiarities not found in the tormer city Such were the thea er in one corner oi the building where were exhibited upon the stage trained birds mice cats and dogs the bowling alley an ingenious piece of mechauism representing a skating scene in which the figures moved as in life the Punch and Judv show and the two Wild Men of Borneo The latter were real curi osities in their way Their height is three feet six inches weight 43 and 45 pounds respectively age unknown but supposed to be between 50 and 00 years Ihey were discovered swinging lrom branch to branch m the forest of Borneo the only people ever discover ed It is supposed that a tribe of such people dwell in the uuexplored wilds of that island They are rather sparely built but their strength is remarkabl One of them standing behind a man whose weight was 241 pounds and placing his hands upon the mans hips lifted him from the floor and Bet him down three feet away without apparent effort Their attendant said that they never yet had found a man too heavy for them to Hit in this manner We must also add to the above list the tight rope exhibition given each afternoon by Madame Guile in the course of which Bhe walks the rope blindfold going backward and forward dances trundles a wheelbarrow across while blindfolded and finally taking a chair balances herself upon the rope while silting in the chair then rises to her feet upon the chair seat without dis turbing its equlibrium Excellent music was furnished daiiy by Eichorns Band and Orchestra assisted by some of the best vocal talent of the city Leaving the exposition we rambled about the city a little We were very much pleased with its general appearance Its street are wide and well shaded having wid brick or stone sidewalks and being well paved The city contains more tine residences than usually seen in cities of like size and they generally have good sized lawns in front though thewater works furnish a bountiful supply of water to the city yet at about every other street corner strands an oldfashioned long handled wooden pump communicating below with a well of excellent water a welcome sight to the heated and thiiaty pedeBtrian The public buildings are not fine generally The exposition building is a neat and commodious structure Macan leys Theater is a substantial stone building The Court House is a large graniteedifice with Doric portico and columns and coat over 1000000 The City Hall is the most pretentious building in the city aud is very fine It is built of stone and coat S500000 Bv far the handsomest building in theeityis that occupied and owned by theCouriorlonnial It is a massive four Rtory edifice of brick trimmed with sandstone We here began to notice a difference in the forms of speech from those of the north The most marked was thenonpronunciation of the letter r giving it the sound of ah as Moah buttah waitah This habit rentiers theconversation slightly uninlelligibla to one unfamiliar with it but one soon be comes accustomed to it bo much bo that if he is not careful he will find himself involuntarily speaking in the same style Before arriving in the cHv we had heen informed titt we would find the ladies of Louisville more beau ifnl than those of CinoiMtati As a nckeye boy we naturally spurned the tlea hut our curiosity being aroused we made careful observations in order to arrive at the truth of the matter The results of our observation compel us to the conclusion that our informant was correct W e certainly saw a greater number of beautiful women during our stay here than while in Cincinnati though we saw not a few in the lattor city Brunettes Beem to predominate Going to the depot to take the train for Cave City another thing peculiar to the southern states struck my attention Over the door of a room was theinscription Colored Passengers Wailing Room In the depots of ail eouthern cities the same distinction iB made colored persons of both sexeB having a waiting room separate from the whites In some cars also a partition across the middle divides the car into twocompartments one for white the other for colored passengers Leaving Louisville we pass for some miles through aperfectly level and formerly very swampy tract of country Most of the route to Cave City however is through quite a rough country which presents some very beautiful scenery as we wereinformed but as it was dark by the time we reached it we can only speak from hearsay Arrived at Cavo City at nine oclock in the evening Here we stop ped on lor the night proposing on the morrow a visit to Mammoth Cave teu miles west This visit we made and will endeavor to give some description of the beauties of the cave in onr next J W II Atlanta Ga Oct 23 1870 High Priced Butter Dairymen often wonder
