house wits one of those odd specimens of frontier architecture fast fading from the landscape before thesweeping strides of a better civilization Not however that it was mean in an particular Thirty years ago it was a palaeo compared to the other rudo log huts in tho vicinity It was built ol hewn logs and mado what is called doublo It was weatherboardedwithout and plastered within giving it an air of neatness as well as comfort The front yard was covered with a sweet tender coating of early spring blue gntss and the oaks and elms had begun U assume their summer garb The front gate was closed and standing by it leaning ovur and looking Juwu Uiu Newton road was a woman She woe beautiful possessing real charms She was not young not one of those radiant beauties who dazzle tho eyes of sillj society swells but possessed of a sweet matronly homelike face tho beauty only found in mothers Perhaps a passerby or casualobserver would have discovered nothing attractive nvuch less beautiful i that commonplace woman standing by the gato gazing down tho big road with eagerness in her face But had he paused he would have seen that plain as those features wcrn they were very regular that although she had lines ol care they wero almost obliterated by lines of pride that her brown eyes toe dark to he blue and too light to b black were Idled with tho eager joy ol a mother expecting tho return of ehild Mrs RUmrt was nearly forty years ol age and had it not been for her matronly appearance might have passed for several years younger On this mild May ovoning sho stands by the gato with all a mothers fondness and pride awaiting tho return of her oldest son from college He has grad uated and is expected on tho evening train at Newton whither his younger brother has gone to meet him with the spring wagon His father had gone a week before to tho city whero Warren wis attending tho medical colloge to hear his son s graduating oration Mr Stuart was tho model farmer of tho Sandy Fork neighborhood He was not tho wealthiest nor tho most aristocratic perhaps but then ho was what is called welltodo in tho world very nuiet and pleasant having but few enemies and many warm friendi Perhaps lie was not as wealthy or influ ential as either Taylor Lvans Arnold whose farms wero near or adjoining his but his word went as far as either and ho never gavo his note As Nnwtou was west of tho Stuar farm the rays of tho sett ing sun fell on the woman s face and sho was com pelled to shade her oyes with her clean white aprou Oh mother aro you looking for them already n asked a bright chcory voice from tho house and tho nex moment there came bounding down the gravel walk a beautiful girl aboui fifteen years of ago with large dark eyes ami hair She pushed tho gate open and took a look down tiio ruau shading her eyes vith her hands Is it time mother P she asked for her mother had been too busy with h thourhlc and watching to answer hei lirst question les dear it is almost tune the mot her answered her vory Umos denot ing kindness llnw long havo you been here mother Not long Oh mother T knew you would b watching lor Warren long before he came Do you suppose he lias grown nuieh P No not sineo wo saw him He has been gone so long oh tc ton Yes hew been gone all winter And now hell bo a doctor wont he Yes I hnpo so the mother answered as if he knew that every diploma does not make the man whose name is written therein a doctor Oh I want to see brother Warren so bid ssid the anxious sister swing ing upi tho gate and humming a tune The youngest brother who had remained at home to plow in the Ileitis now came by riding one plow lioie and leading the other and isked if it was not time for them to come1 Almost William said the mother o and put your horses awjUjjndJioed them by that time they will be here I expect William who was only thirteen years of age was rather jonng for a plow Doy bat he was laree and able to manage b team almost as well as Clarence who was four years older ttb Dont you hear tho wagon Rose Mrs Stuart asked Where queried the darkeyed girl breaking off the air sho washumming and ceasing to swing on tho creaky gate Down at the bridge The mother had evidently asked Roso the question to draw her attention and stop the noise she was making Yes I do they aro crossing the bridge now cried Ross letting go the gate and ready to ily down the road to meet her father and long absent brother No no dont said her mother it may be some stranger crossing tho bridge and you will feel somewhatembarrassed to be running to meet him O Id just pretend the pet lamb had got away or the calf was out of the lot and I had been sent after it said Rose with a merry laugh Mrs Stuart smiled as she gazed into the happy face of her daughter But the attention of both were fixed upon the road The sun had now kindly dipped behind the treetops so there was no need to shade their eyes longer though the light was yetbrilliant and glorious There was no sound after the wagon had crossed the bridge and mother and daughter knew It was crossing the sandy strip at the foot of the hill Soon tho light rattle of a wagon could bo heard There is something in the chucking of a wagon by which we can almost recognize one from another Mrs Stuart fell sure this wol her husbands vehicle yet for fear she might be mistaken she dared not say so To have expressed even a firm beliaf would have sent Rose bounding toward it But now it comes up tho hill around tho bend in tho road and there is no mistaking the tall gray and roan as well as the large fine figure of father and husband in the back seat And thefe too at his side is tho brother and son with Clarence before driving up tho hill at asweepingtrot Rose uttered a scream of there they come and was hali way down the hill before her mother could utter a word Sho met the wagon down tho hill much to tho annoyance of Clarence and springing in kissed her father and longabsent brother and then sat down between them liko the child she was to ride to the house TIIE HE THEY COME Warren sprang from tho wagon and was clasped in tho arms of his proud mother Oh Warren how you havo grown but you are only taller said Mrs Stuart You look real pale I fear my son ymi have studied too hard this winter Did you get through all htf Yes mother said tho young M D with a smile I am through with college now though my preceptors say I am just prepared for study O dear I thought when any one wont through college they never had to study any more said tho giddy Roso I thought they got it all at onee Warren laughed at his sister and told her sho would learn better when sho was older He thou offered to heir his brother Clarence carry tho trunk U tho house but tho young fanner said that doctors wero not lit persons to handle luggago and throwing the heavy trunk upon his own broad shoul der ho walked in tho house with it The return of a youth to his home after a long absence is always pleasant Thero was so much to talk about on this evening that Warren was kept busv J ho college tho graduatia speech he had delivered which Roso wanted him to repeat for the edifictv tion of tho crowd his classmates boarding house city and even journey home had to bo thoroughly discussed Then with supper came Pcto tho ped dler who in traveling around the Sandy Fork neighborhood always made it convenient to stop over night with fanner Stuart Pete was an old intimate friend of tho family and Mrs Stuart purchased many ribbons laecs handkerchiefs and also tablo huen from his pack Pete unslung his wares and merchan disc at the door with as much freedom and familiarity as if he were a member of the household He greetedWarrens return in a hearty manner de claring in his laconic way Pll be doggoned boy if you ArmX begin to look like a doctor sure enough All ye lack is sonjo beard on yer face Next time I git therheumatics Til furnish you a firstclass pa tient Warren was the center of attraction at supper and all the evening hut hi mother seeing how tired he was in duced him to retire early CHAPTER TL tub uttik ciiirpra Warren Stuart arose early the next morning and as he had not been en abled l he night before to pay tho dumb animals of tho place a visit heconcluded he would do so Ufore breakfast Tho sun was up shining brightly and Oarenco and Will were fooding the horses and getting ready for the day work There wero many familiar creatnn for him to sec Bally and Bess had to bo pattod caressed am made to know that their former master had come homo Then he paid a vih to the goats and sheep in thepastureSonic seemed to recognize him and ran bleating toward the outstretched hand that so oft had fed them When he enme to gaze about on tho beautiful landscape the fields and pastures of his dear old homo he was almost sorry that he hnd that diploma with Uiodegree of M D I could live happier here as afarmerboy thjui anywhero else on earth ho sighed But he remembered that he could not always be a txy and nil the boys could not he fanners Blessed indeed is the lot of the boy who is a farmer vintniinmeled by ambition holding swcol communion with nature the year round we can but envy the farmer Tutu bo toils but when night comea ho sleeps without hanassin cares or annoyances ol the morrow No troubled brain and vexatious suits fall in price of goods tottering banks or dangerous patients disturb his sleep And while he sleeps the com and cattle jrow in value All these reilectlons came to the mind of the young M D as ho gazed aboul over the old homestead At last he turned about to enter tho house He had wandered around to the rear of tho fajmhoose and was coming up to the kitchen when ho discovered some one sitting on tho back porch who attracted his attention It was only a little boy not over six or under four years of age to judgo by his face though his body was dwarfed and his little form misshapen He was a littlehunchback with a sweet patient face which bore evidences of suffering and yet the large blue eyes wero clear and bright He sat in his little rocking chairenjoying the warm sunlight which streamed in upon the latticed portico Where did the child come fromP he asked aloud though he evidently did not expect an answer for he was too far away from the child for it to hear and he saw no one else Some one else saw him however Peddler Pete was an early riser and on this morning as was his usual custom when at farmer Stuarts he lit his pipe and took a stroll about the place beforobreakfast Yo never saw that little feller before he asked stopping from behind a cherry bush within three or four feet of Warren and nodding to i ward the little cripple I No I never saw him nor heard of1 him before Hes well known all overSandyFork and Pete pressed his finger in j his pipe bowl I That may be true Pete and he still bo a stranger to ma You know I have not been about Sandy Fork very much for the last live years Three years in college and then two in the medical1 school have taken considerable from 1 my life j Thats so why doggon it Id forgot that said Pete pulling away at his pipe That is an interesting child Pete shook his head sadly and said Yes hes a good child and will never be at homo any place save in Heaven Hes just one o them good little boys tho Sundayschool books tell us about who allers die hes got to die and theu I guess some one will write a book about him Who is he and why is he hero P Didnt yo ever hear of Mr Lake man Benjamin I believe who lived down on Sandy Fork creek on tho old Plumber place P I think I heard of the name a year or so ago when I was home during vacation i WoU thats his child Where is Mr Lakeman P 1 O him P hes dead And the boys mother i Shes dead too died fust said 1 Pcto sadly refilling his pipe And the child is heir to tho Plumber P TrUlX lb S VLl j TOhaHJioflHiu lie has ample support Not much said Pete striking a match and applying it to his pipe 1 Why not The little fellow was euchred outo It some way Ho hasnt nothiu but n hundred and sixty acres o brush and hills not worth ten cents an acre Then father keeps him as a mattei of charity P No boy ycr wrong agin I should have Baid doctor but I forgot and reto laughed But Warren was toe much interested in the little cripple be foro him to heed the little joke of his friond the peddlor You say my father dos not keep him ho asked No yer father docs keep him but Dot as a matter of charity said Pete He ha3 other means thenf Not a dollar Why Pete what do you mean Warren asked in astonishment you talk hi riddles please explain your self Haw haw haw I liko to see ye puz zled boy no doc I mean but Ill not keep you on tho ragged edge osuspense any longer That boy is sup ported by his sister His sisterr Yes Helen Lakeman Thero were ly two o them when tho old folks n ldidn tknow much about the family cos Id nover sold em much goods they bein out o my regular range ye know lint when Lakeman died it seems every body even his own gal thought ho was welltodo in the world but some debts como agin his estate and took every thing except that brush and hill land too poor to sprout beans Wall thero were the gal then fourteen for it was two years ago and her cnpplcd brothor ouly four one had some edgoeation an tried to keep school but coufdnt pass muster some way then sho hired out she a been lero I believe for the last six or savm months Tho story was a simple one and told vith but very little feeling on the part f Peto It was simply the struggle of 1 young girl trying to do her doty Warren received it as such Ho saw nothing especially grand in it then There was notliing noble in a girl hiring out to earn a livelihood for herself or herself and invalid brother much less any thing romantic What romance 30uld thero bo in a girl hiring out It was too common and a romance to be a romance in tho worlds eyes must be very unnatural very uncommon Hes a nice little boy said Pete after a few moments silenco stilllooking at the child Though hos awfully crippled and can t walk without havin his hands on his knees hes just aspatient as kin bo an Helen shes mighty good to him Sho nover scolds him an allers looks to his comfort though she be tired out I sometimes thiuk death to that ehild will be a blcssin Petes tones were sad This 1 madic man with all hia bad grammar and pronunciation was something oft philosopher He had traveledconsiderably in his humblo calling andhaving a keen perception picked up many truths not to be found in text books In fact he was an educated man not from tho standpoint of books but from nature Why do you think the death of thai child would bo a blessing PetoPWarren iskeu Did yo never pee a bird with acripplod wing and see hoar the poor little thing tried to Ily and couldnt WeU this child gorxl an he is holds dors that grd Every cent sho makes gos to support herself an the child The breakfast hell rang and Pete dii not complete his sentence t1 That ijiornln Warrtii noticed that the eyes of the Elreo gi rl who was saenhcing herself for her crippled brother were very largo and blue and her forehead was broad and high and her features were regular She was neat and tidy and did not look at all like the sloven kitchen girls he had seen Her hair was golden and neatly gat hered in a net There was a switet sadness upon her face which touched him not alittle when he remembered that all hei earnings barely supported herself and her brother chapter nr AT CHURCH THB MOONLIT WALK Warren Stuart regarded the girl as a commonplace mortal and yet there was something a little more thancommon about her Ho seldom saw her save at mealtime when she came in to wait upon the table She knew aservants place and kept it She wasmodest almost to shyness and seldom spoke never unless compelled to do soCommonplace as he supposed her to be he day thought he discerned a noetic adness in the large dark blue eve is she stood like one in a reverie The kitchen work at Stuarts was noverysmall matter and it required all her time and energy to accomplish her part She was nearly always busy and frequently when lie saw that sad worn face and tired little form he felt a sympathy for her One evening after the days work as done he was pussing the kitchen where Helen would insist on staying and heard her engaged in an animated conversation with her brother It was a simple conversation such as a child might understand about Heaven Liu tie Amos was asking his sister if he hould be relieved of his infirmities there and whether or not he would set his mother and father The answers o the girl wero low and sweet assurino the little cripple that ho would suffer nc pain there and would moot those whe had gone before Simple and common place as the conversation was it had something about it which affected War ren It was Warrens intention to remain at home during the summer and early n the fall seek a location to enter into tho practice of his profession It was now tho busy season for farmers and he did not meet many of his formei friends and acquaintances The second Sunday after his return was the day foi proacmng in the bandy orkschoolhouse The Methodist had taken this one of their circuits and sent Rev Allen Blaze a famous jrosnel pounder to preach there once a month The schoolhouse was aboutthreefourths of a mile from Mr Stuarts and down tho creek known as Sandy Fork It was well hidden In the trees and the road to it led through the forest Tho new preacher was very popular and his audiences were always large Not unfrequently the schoolhouse failed to hold them and many stood outside at tho door and windows Peter Stair the peddler had been his rounds and dropped in at the Stu arts tho night before thn Snndav on I Youd better gon hear him said Peter to Warren Hes a regular stormer I tell yo He can make things blaze too His sermons dro ali wool handmado and warranted not to fade You can hoar one on Sunday and itll keep a ringin through yer ears all tho rest o the week just like one tune at a dance Besides some times ho fairly lifts a feller out o his boots Ho raises yo bo high yo can most git a birdseye view 0 the New Jerusalem Warren consented to go and the next morning the horses wero hitched to tho wagon himself his fathor and mother and sister got in and drove off to the schoolhouse The othor two boys went on horseback preferring a gallop tlirough tho woods to the case and comfort of any wagon or carriage Why helloa Warren how areyouP said Mr Arnold the moment he alighted from the wagon in front of the schoolhouse Mr Arnold dropped the stick on which he was whittling to toko Warrens hand He was a man a little over medium height somewhat slender th sandv hair and whiskors which wero only on his chin and cropped short I suppose you have como back among us a fullfledged doctor he went on to say I SUPPOSE YOU IIAVB CUME HACK A FULLFLEDGED DOCTOR That remains to bo seen MArnold said Warrca Ho was now iiurrounded by tho old men and young men of the neighbor hood each extending to him a kindly ereotinr Warren was a sort of favorite in the neighborhood and all were glad to see him back Mrs Arnold and even her daughter Miss Hallio a sprightly little creature with a somewhat florid complexion and hair and a face con siderably freckled camo to him and insisted so earnestly that ho should go homo with them for dinner that he could not refuse Thoro was to be preaching at night and ho could go home with his parents then so after tho flonnon was over he got into Mr Arnolds carriage and sat down by the side of Miss Hallie whom he had known since childhood Miss Hallie did h best in her shallow way to entertain him but a conversation on lwraux an dress has but little attraction for a young man whose clothes still have the college smell upon thm The sermon at night was fir more impressive to our hero than the ono in the morning Mr Blase old Blaze blue Blaze mid many orher Mazes as he was cilld tk his ntu from Matthew the XXV and fortieth verse And the King sh ill answer and say unto them Verily I say unto you Inasmuch as ye have dime it unto the least of these My brethren ye have dono it unto Me Hi theme was charity and every word seemed like on arrow sent home to Warrens heart When he alluded to the least of these the youth thought of poor little Amos crippled and helpless and there seemed to raise above the minister a mist which took tho shape of an angel the face of which was Helens He alluded to the sacrifice made by Rime noble women of the earth whose names were now known not to fame but inscribed in Heaven and whose crown would be brightest there The sennoii from beginning to end seemed inspired by tho add ofheroio selfsacrifice of that girl Mr Blazo did not know there was such a person in existence yet to use one of Peddler Petes characteristicexpressions his cloth was cut for anymeasure Why had he not before noticed that this real heroine was wasting her life for her little brother was the thought that came to Wanens mind I will see my father and mother about it When preaching was over Mr Bluze and his wife consented to go homo with Mr Stuart and Peddler Peto being there the wagon was full withoutWarren Never mind me father he said Its only a nice walk and the moon 6hines brightly The truth Is our young doctor preferred to walk alone that ho might the bettor digest thodiscourse he had heard Pete insisted on walking in his stead but he would not hear to it and the wagon rolled 011 with its human freight leaving Warren nfoot and alone Ho started briskly down tho wooded road but had gone only a short distance when he almost ran against some one who was tripping lightly along before him Excuse me he said There was a timid acceptance of the apology and the slight form drow back in the dark part of the road for him to pass It is so dark here said Warren Very dark Mr Stuart responded t voice sweetly I beg pardon but is not this Helen It is sir was the timid response Were you at church Yes sir And aro now on your way homo alone P Yes sir but I dont mind it I am not afraid and the walk is pleasant But you shall not go alone Helen I will be your escort Oh if yon pleaso sir I am not afraid tlie girl said timidly The moon shines brightly and I do not want to trouble you Nonnso Helen its no trouble to me he said laughing and he tookher arm as if she woro some great lady They walked on and began to talk about the sermon Warren could not but contrast the depth of Helensconversation with tho shallowness of Hallio Arnold As the timidity left her she began to converse with a knowlodao surprising in a hired girL Where had sho learned so much was the question our hero asked himself As they came tho moon fell upon her upturned face Oh how lovely it looked Tho largo blno eyes were dark and brilliant Tho unconfined hair was ringlets of gold and tho form neatly but not grandly attired was beautiful They were just in the midst of ananimated conversation upon tho sermon when the moons rays revealed the real loveliness of Helen Lakeman Warren Arnold nover has forgotten and we aro assured he never will forget thatmoonlielit walk Ho may have had othor happy moments in his life but this the first dawning of a pure love was the happiest moment of his existenco He asked Helen why sho lid not go to church in tho forenoon and sho answered that having to get dinner she did not have time She only got an opportunity to steal away and hear the word of Ood after she naa aone aa days work and put little Amos to bed But why did you not go witn mother and 3ister in the carriage P She made no answer to this and War ren bit his lip There was room for tho minister his wife and even Peddler Pete but this poor girl who was an ecl on earth after toiling all day Sunday was compelled to walk a mile and a half to church Tho neglect of his parents however had given him tho blessed pnvilcge ot Helen scompany and ho had discovered how pre cious she was to him Wc will not nttempt to record their conversation It was not of love out lovo itself Both knew it both felt yet both struggled against It The old farmhouse was reached too soon and ho conducted Helen mucli against hor desire to the sittingroom where his parents and their visitors were Had a bombshell exploded in the room the astonishment 01 Mr ana lvirs Stuart could not have been greater Warren was sure there was a frown d anger on the face of his father and a look of pam spread over his mother a feat urea fTo be continued SARSAPARILLA OH BLOOD ISD LIVER SYRUP A pearless waa nothing about this particulararmhouse todistinguish it from oth TUB PEDDLER ers save tnat it more of an air of perhafj4 possessed quiet neatness than any other in the Sandy Fork neighborhood The house wits one of those odd specimens of frontier architecture fast fading from the landscape before thesweeping strides of a better civilization Not however that it was mean in an particular Thirty years ago it was a palaeo compared to the other rudo log huts in tho vicinity It was built ol hewn logs and mado what is called doublo It was weatherboardedwithout and plastered within giving it an air of neatness as well as comfort The front yard was covered with a sweet tender coating of early spring blue gntss and the oaks and elms had begun U assume their summer garb The front gate was closed and standing by it leaning ovur and looking Juwu Uiu Newton road was a woman She woe beautiful possessing real charms She was not young not one of those radiant beauties who dazzle tho eyes of sillj society swells but possessed of a sweet matronly homelike face tho beauty only found in mothers Perhaps a passerby or casualobserver would have discovered nothing attractive nvuch less beautiful i that commonplace woman standing by the gato gazing down tho big road with eagerness in her face But had he paused he would have seen that plain as those features wcrn they were very regular that although she had lines ol care they wero almost obliterated by lines of pride that her brown eyes toe dark to he blue and too light to b black were Idled with tho eager joy ol a mother expecting tho return of ehild Mrs RUmrt was nearly forty years ol age and had it not been for her matronly appearance might have passed for several years younger On this mild May ovoning sho stands by the gato with all a mothers fondness and pride awaiting tho return of her oldest son from college He has grad uated and is expected on tho evening train at Newton whither his younger brother has gone to meet him with the spring wagon His father had gone a week before to tho city whero Warren wis attending tho medical colloge to hear his son s graduating oration Mr Stuart was tho model farmer of tho Sandy Fork neighborhood He was not tho wealthiest nor tho most aristocratic perhaps but then ho was what is called welltodo in tho world very nuiet and pleasant having but few enemies and many warm friendi Perhaps lie was not as wealthy or influ ential as either Taylor Lvans Arnold whose farms wero near or adjoining his but his word went as far as either and ho never gavo his note As Nnwtou was west of tho Stuar farm the rays of tho sett ing sun fell on the woman s face and sho was com pelled to shade her oyes with her clean white aprou Oh mother aro you looking for them already n asked a bright chcory voice from tho house and tho nex moment there came bounding down the gravel walk a beautiful girl aboui fifteen years of ago with large dark eyes ami hair She pushed tho gate open and took a look down tiio ruau shading her eyes vith her hands Is it time mother P she asked for her mother had been too busy with h thourhlc and watching to answer hei lirst question les dear it is almost tune the mot her answered her vory Umos denot ing kindness llnw long havo you been here mother Not long Oh mother T knew you would b watching lor Warren long before he came Do you suppose he lias grown nuieh P No not sineo wo saw him He has been gone so long oh tc ton Yes hew been gone all winter And now hell bo a doctor wont he Yes I hnpo so the mother answered as if he knew that every diploma does not make the man whose name is written therein a doctor Oh I want to see brother Warren so bid ssid the anxious sister swing ing upi tho gate and humming a tune The youngest brother who had remained at home to plow in the Ileitis now came by riding one plow lioie and leading the other and isked if it was not time for them to come1 Almost William said the mother o and put your horses awjUjjndJioed them by that time they will be here I expect William who was only thirteen years of age was rather jonng for a plow Doy bat he was laree and able to manage b team almost as well as Clarence who was four years older ttb Dont you hear tho wagon Rose Mrs Stuart asked Where queried the darkeyed girl breaking off the air sho washumming and ceasing to swing on tho creaky gate Down at the bridge The mother had evidently asked Roso the question to draw her attention and stop the noise she was making Yes I do they aro crossing the bridge now cried Ross letting go the gate and ready to ily down the road to meet her father and long absent brother No no dont said her mother it may be some stranger crossing tho bridge and you will feel somewhatembarrassed to be running to meet him O Id just pretend the pet lamb had got away or the calf was out of the lot and I had been sent after it said Rose with a merry laugh Mrs Stuart smiled as she gazed into the happy face of her daughter But the attention of both were fixed upon the road The sun had now kindly dipped behind the treetops so there was no need to shade their eyes longer though the light was yetbrilliant and glorious There was no sound after the wagon had crossed the bridge and mother and daughter knew It was crossing the sandy strip at the foot of the hill Soon tho light rattle of a wagon could bo heard There is something in the chucking of a wagon by which we can almost recognize one from another Mrs Stuart fell sure this wol her husbands vehicle yet for fear she might be mistaken she dared not say so To have expressed even a firm beliaf would have sent Rose bounding toward it But now it comes up tho hill around tho bend in tho road and there is no mistaking the tall gray and roan as well as the large fine figure of father and husband in the back seat And thefe too at his side is tho brother and son with Clarence before driving up tho hill at asweepingtrot Rose uttered a scream of there they come and was hali way down the hill before her mother could utter a word Sho met the wagon down tho hill much to tho annoyance of Clarence and springing in kissed her father and longabsent brother and then sat down between them liko the child she was to ride to the house TIIE HE THEY COME Warren sprang from tho wagon and was clasped in tho arms of his proud mother Oh Warren how you havo grown but you are only taller said Mrs Stuart You look real pale I fear my son ymi have studied too hard this winter Did you get through all htf Yes mother said tho young M D with a smile I am through with college now though my preceptors say I am just prepared for study O dear I thought when any one wont through college they never had to study any more said tho giddy Roso I thought they got it all at onee Warren laughed at his sister and told her sho would learn better when sho was older He thou offered to heir his brother Clarence carry tho trunk U tho house but tho young fanner said that doctors wero not lit persons to handle luggago and throwing the heavy trunk upon his own broad shoul der ho walked in tho house with it The return of a youth to his home after a long absence is always pleasant Thero was so much to talk about on this evening that Warren was kept busv J ho college tho graduatia speech he had delivered which Roso wanted him to repeat for the edifictv tion of tho crowd his classmates boarding house city and even journey home had to bo thoroughly discussed Then with supper came Pcto tho ped dler who in traveling around the Sandy Fork neighborhood always made it convenient to stop over night with fanner Stuart Pete was an old intimate friend of tho family and Mrs Stuart purchased many ribbons laecs handkerchiefs and also tablo huen from his pack Pete unslung his wares and merchan disc at the door with as much freedom and familiarity as if he were a member of the household He greetedWarrens return in a hearty manner de claring in his laconic way Pll be doggoned boy if you ArmX begin to look like a doctor sure enough All ye lack is sonjo beard on yer face Next time I git therheumatics Til furnish you a firstclass pa tient Warren was the center of attraction at supper and all the evening hut hi mother seeing how tired he was in duced him to retire early CHAPTER TL tub uttik ciiirpra Warren Stuart arose early the next morning and as he had not been en abled l he night before to pay tho dumb animals of tho place a visit heconcluded he would do so Ufore breakfast Tho sun was up shining brightly and Oarenco and Will were fooding the horses and getting ready for the day work There wero many familiar creatnn for him to sec Bally and Bess had to bo pattod caressed am made to know that their former master had come homo Then he paid a vih to the goats and sheep in thepastureSonic seemed to recognize him and ran bleating toward the outstretched hand that so oft had fed them When he enme to gaze about on tho beautiful landscape the fields and pastures of his dear old homo he was almost sorry that he hnd that diploma with Uiodegree of M D I could live happier here as afarmerboy thjui anywhero else on earth ho sighed But he remembered that he could not always be a txy and nil the boys could not he fanners Blessed indeed is the lot of the boy who is a farmer vintniinmeled by ambition holding swcol communion with nature the year round we can but envy the farmer Tutu bo toils but when night comea ho sleeps without hanassin cares or annoyances ol the morrow No troubled brain and vexatious suits fall in price of goods tottering banks or dangerous patients disturb his sleep And while he sleeps the com and cattle jrow in value All these reilectlons came to the mind of the young M D as ho gazed aboul over the old homestead At last he turned about to enter tho house He had wandered around to the rear of tho fajmhoose and was coming up to the kitchen when ho discovered some one sitting on tho back porch who attracted his attention It was only a little boy not over six or under four years of age to judgo by his face though his body was dwarfed and his little form misshapen He was a littlehunchback with a sweet patient face which bore evidences of suffering and yet the large blue eyes wero clear and bright He sat in his little rocking chairenjoying the warm sunlight which streamed in upon the latticed portico Where did the child come fromP he asked aloud though he evidently did not expect an answer for he was too far away from the child for it to hear and he saw no one else Some one else saw him however Peddler Pete was an early riser and on this morning as was his usual custom when at farmer Stuarts he lit his pipe and took a stroll about the place beforobreakfast Yo never saw that little feller before he asked stopping from behind a cherry bush within three or four feet of Warren and nodding to i ward the little cripple I No I never saw him nor heard of1 him before Hes well known all overSandyFork and Pete pressed his finger in j his pipe bowl I That may be true Pete and he still bo a stranger to ma You know I have not been about Sandy Fork very much for the last live years Three years in college and then two in the medical1 school have taken considerable from 1 my life j Thats so why doggon it Id forgot that said Pete pulling away at his pipe That is an interesting child Pete shook his head sadly and said Yes hes a good child and will never be at homo any place save in Heaven Hes just one o them good little boys tho Sundayschool books tell us about who allers die hes got to die and theu I guess some one will write a book about him Who is he and why is he hero P Didnt yo ever hear of Mr Lake man Benjamin I believe who lived down on Sandy Fork creek on tho old Plumber place P I think I heard of the name a year or so ago when I was home during vacation i WoU thats his child Where is Mr Lakeman P 1 O him P hes dead And the boys mother i Shes dead too died fust said 1 Pcto sadly refilling his pipe And the child is heir to tho Plumber P TrUlX lb S VLl j TOhaHJioflHiu lie has ample support Not much said Pete striking a match and applying it to his pipe 1 Why not The little fellow was euchred outo It some way Ho hasnt nothiu but n hundred and sixty acres o brush and hills not worth ten cents an acre Then father keeps him as a mattei of charity P No boy ycr wrong agin I should have Baid doctor but I forgot and reto laughed But Warren was toe much interested in the little cripple be foro him to heed the little joke of his friond the peddlor You say my father dos not keep him ho asked No yer father docs keep him but Dot as a matter of charity said Pete He ha3 other means thenf Not a dollar Why Pete what do you mean Warren asked in astonishment you talk hi riddles please explain your self Haw haw haw I liko to see ye puz zled boy no doc I mean but Ill not keep you on tho ragged edge osuspense any longer That boy is sup ported by his sister His sisterr Yes Helen Lakeman Thero were ly two o them when tho old folks n ldidn tknow much about the family cos Id nover sold em much goods they bein out o my regular range ye know lint when Lakeman died it seems every body even his own gal thought ho was welltodo in the world but some debts como agin his estate and took every thing except that brush and hill land too poor to sprout beans Wall thero were the gal then fourteen for it was two years ago and her cnpplcd brothor ouly four one had some edgoeation an tried to keep school but coufdnt pass muster some way then sho hired out she a been lero I believe for the last six or savm months Tho story was a simple one and told vith but very little feeling on the part f Peto It was simply the struggle of 1 young girl trying to do her doty Warren received it as such Ho saw nothing especially grand in it then There was notliing noble in a girl hiring out to earn a livelihood for herself or herself and invalid brother much less any thing romantic What romance 30uld thero bo in a girl hiring out It was too common and a romance to be a romance in tho worlds eyes must be very unnatural very uncommon Hes a nice little boy said Pete after a few moments silenco stilllooking at the child Though hos awfully crippled and can t walk without havin his hands on his knees hes just aspatient as kin bo an Helen shes mighty good to him Sho nover scolds him an allers looks to his comfort though she be tired out I sometimes thiuk death to that ehild will be a blcssin Petes tones were sad This 1 madic man with all hia bad grammar and pronunciation was something oft philosopher He had traveledconsiderably in his humblo calling andhaving a keen perception picked up many truths not to be found in text books In fact he was an educated man not from tho standpoint of books but from nature Why do you think the death of thai child would bo a blessing PetoPWarren iskeu Did yo never pee a bird with acripplod wing and see hoar the poor little thing tried to Ily and couldnt WeU this child gorxl an he is holds dors that grd Every cent sho makes gos to support herself an the child The breakfast hell rang and Pete dii not complete his sentence t1 That ijiornln Warrtii noticed that the eyes of the Elreo gi rl who was saenhcing herself for her crippled brother were very largo and blue and her forehead was broad and high and her features were regular She was neat and tidy and did not look at all like the sloven kitchen girls he had seen Her hair was golden and neatly gat hered in a net There was a switet sadness upon her face which touched him not alittle when he remembered that all hei earnings barely supported herself and her brother chapter nr AT CHURCH THB MOONLIT WALK Warren Stuart regarded the girl as a commonplace mortal and yet there was something a little more thancommon about her Ho seldom saw her save at mealtime when she came in to wait upon the table She knew aservants place and kept it She wasmodest almost to shyness and seldom spoke never unless compelled to do soCommonplace as he supposed her to be he day thought he discerned a noetic adness in the large dark blue eve is she stood like one in a reverie The kitchen work at Stuarts was noverysmall matter and it required all her time and energy to accomplish her part She was nearly always busy and frequently when lie saw that sad worn face and tired little form he felt a sympathy for her One evening after the days work as done he was pussing the kitchen where Helen would insist on staying and heard her engaged in an animated conversation with her brother It was a simple conversation such as a child might understand about Heaven Liu tie Amos was asking his sister if he hould be relieved of his infirmities there and whether or not he would set his mother and father The answers o the girl wero low and sweet assurino the little cripple that ho would suffer nc pain there and would moot those whe had gone before Simple and common place as the conversation was it had something about it which affected War ren It was Warrens intention to remain at home during the summer and early n the fall seek a location to enter into tho practice of his profession It was now tho busy season for farmers and he did not meet many of his formei friends and acquaintances The second Sunday after his return was the day foi proacmng in the bandy orkschoolhouse The Methodist had taken this one of their circuits and sent Rev Allen Blaze a famous jrosnel pounder to preach there once a month The schoolhouse was aboutthreefourths of a mile from Mr Stuarts and down tho creek known as Sandy Fork It was well hidden In the trees and the road to it led through the forest Tho new preacher was very popular and his audiences were always large Not unfrequently the schoolhouse failed to hold them and many stood outside at tho door and windows Peter Stair the peddler had been his rounds and dropped in at the Stu arts tho night before thn Snndav on I Youd better gon hear him said Peter to Warren Hes a regular stormer I tell yo He can make things blaze too His sermons dro ali wool handmado and warranted not to fade You can hoar one on Sunday and itll keep a ringin through yer ears all tho rest o the week just like one tune at a dance Besides some times ho fairly lifts a feller out o his boots Ho raises yo bo high yo can most git a birdseye view 0 the New Jerusalem Warren consented to go and the next morning the horses wero hitched to tho wagon himself his fathor and mother and sister got in and drove off to the schoolhouse The othor two boys went on horseback preferring a gallop tlirough tho woods to the case and comfort of any wagon or carriage Why helloa Warren how areyouP said Mr Arnold the moment he alighted from the wagon in front of the schoolhouse Mr Arnold dropped the stick on which he was whittling to toko Warrens hand He was a man a little over medium height somewhat slender th sandv hair and whiskors which wero only on his chin and cropped short I suppose you have como back among us a fullfledged doctor he went on to say I SUPPOSE YOU IIAVB CUME HACK A FULLFLEDGED DOCTOR That remains to bo seen MArnold said Warrca Ho was now iiurrounded by tho old men and young men of the neighbor hood each extending to him a kindly ereotinr Warren was a sort of favorite in the neighborhood and all were glad to see him back Mrs Arnold and even her daughter Miss Hallio a sprightly little creature with a somewhat florid complexion and hair and a face con siderably freckled camo to him and insisted so earnestly that ho should go homo with them for dinner that he could not refuse Thoro was to be preaching at night and ho could go home with his parents then so after tho flonnon was over he got into Mr Arnolds carriage and sat down by the side of Miss Hallie whom he had known since childhood Miss Hallie did h best in her shallow way to entertain him but a conversation on lwraux an dress has but little attraction for a young man whose clothes still have the college smell upon thm The sermon at night was fir more impressive to our hero than the ono in the morning Mr Blase old Blaze blue Blaze mid many orher Mazes as he was cilld tk his ntu from Matthew the XXV and fortieth verse And the King sh ill answer and say unto them Verily I say unto you Inasmuch as ye have dime it unto the least of these My brethren ye have dono it unto Me Hi theme was charity and every word seemed like on arrow sent home to Warrens heart When he alluded to the least of these the youth thought of poor little Amos crippled and helpless and there seemed to raise above the minister a mist which took tho shape of an angel the face of which was Helens He alluded to the sacrifice made by Rime noble women of the earth whose names were now known not to fame but inscribed in Heaven and whose crown would be brightest there The sennoii from beginning to end seemed inspired by tho add ofheroio selfsacrifice of that girl Mr Blazo did not know there was such a person in existence yet to use one of Peddler Petes characteristicexpressions his cloth was cut for anymeasure Why had he not before noticed that this real heroine was wasting her life for her little brother was the thought that came to Wanens mind I will see my father and mother about it When preaching was over Mr Bluze and his wife consented to go homo with Mr Stuart and Peddler Peto being there the wagon was full withoutWarren Never mind me father he said Its only a nice walk and the moon 6hines brightly The truth Is our young doctor preferred to walk alone that ho might the bettor digest thodiscourse he had heard Pete insisted on walking in his stead but he would not hear to it and the wagon rolled 011 with its human freight leaving Warren nfoot and alone Ho started briskly down tho wooded road but had gone only a short distance when he almost ran against some one who was tripping lightly along before him Excuse me he said There was a timid acceptance of the apology and the slight form drow back in the dark part of the road for him to pass It is so dark here said Warren Very dark Mr Stuart responded t voice sweetly I beg pardon but is not this Helen It is sir was the timid response Were you at church Yes sir And aro now on your way homo alone P Yes sir but I dont mind it I am not afraid and the walk is pleasant But you shall not go alone Helen I will be your escort Oh if yon pleaso sir I am not afraid tlie girl said timidly The moon shines brightly and I do not want to trouble you Nonnso Helen its no trouble to me he said laughing and he tookher arm as if she woro some great lady They walked on and began to talk about the sermon Warren could not but contrast the depth of Helensconversation with tho shallowness of Hallio Arnold As the timidity left her she began to converse with a knowlodao surprising in a hired girL Where had sho learned so much was the question our hero asked himself As they came tho moon fell upon her upturned face Oh how lovely it looked Tho largo blno eyes were dark and brilliant Tho unconfined hair was ringlets of gold and tho form neatly but not grandly attired was beautiful They were just in the midst of ananimated conversation upon tho sermon when the moons rays revealed the real loveliness of Helen Lakeman Warren Arnold nover has forgotten and we aro assured he never will forget thatmoonlielit walk Ho may have had othor happy moments in his life but this the first dawning of a pure love was the happiest moment of his existenco He asked Helen why sho lid not go to church in tho forenoon and sho answered that having to get dinner she did not have time She only got an opportunity to steal away and hear the word of Ood after she naa aone aa days work and put little Amos to bed But why did you not go witn mother and 3ister in the carriage P She made no answer to this and War ren bit his lip There was room for tho minister his wife and even Peddler Pete but this poor girl who was an ecl on earth after toiling all day Sunday was compelled to walk a mile and a half to church Tho neglect of his parents however had given him tho blessed pnvilcge ot Helen scompany and ho had discovered how pre cious she was to him Wc will not nttempt to record their conversation It was not of love out lovo itself Both knew it both felt yet both struggled against It The old farmhouse was reached too soon and ho conducted Helen mucli against hor desire to the sittingroom where his parents and their visitors were Had a bombshell exploded in the room the astonishment 01 Mr ana lvirs Stuart could not have been greater Warren was sure there was a frown d anger on the face of his father and a look of pam spread over his mother a feat urea fTo be continued SARSAPARILLA OH BLOOD ISD LIVER SYRUP A pearless
