rich and beautiful things and she enjoyed the glimpse in the glass of the welldressed rejection oftarself This Is exceedingly beoomtngBaid Mrs Gould tho shopwoman before mentioned who had been sent with the dresseH to make any needed alterations it was a rich garnet velvet made up with just enoughsparkling iridescent trimming to relieve itsplainnesB and that real lace set is just the thing to wear with it Auother an airy black lace looped up in every available spot with tiny gold atari which gleamed in and out like fireflies You must wear natural flowers in crimson with this said Mrs Gould eitherrosebuds or fuchsias A rich white brocadesatin combined with creamy lace was the next and Isabel was as near being a beauty in it as she would ever be Purple pansies shall be my flowers when 1 wear this Bhe said half in soliloquy as she stood by the glass while skillful Mrs Gould took out a stitch here and there in tbe drapery and looped it more artistically Yes Mrs Falconer she replied there is a harmony between the sweet pure flowers and whito which all do notrecognize to my mind there is nothing so purely elegant in dress as white lace and this creamy Bluff is of such a delicate pattern The riding habit came also and fitted beautifully Isabel bad a fine form and carriage and was capable of greatimprovement under the transforming touch of dress and the dark navy blue of her habit was very becoming ns well as tbe hat with its long drooping feather which reached nearly to her shoulder and mingledgracefully with her curls which she worehabitually now as Mr Falconer liked to see tbem A suitable length Of time in which to dress is a luxury iu itself said Isabel as she stood before her mirror brushing her hair and recalled Mme Amots where the tired girls were obliged to be on duty at such an hour under aJl circumstances I think dear madam if you are expecting to see me behind your counter again in one year or ever again you are doomed todisappointment and she laughed a lowhappy little laugh as she pinned back ber curls with a Bilver arrow which Gracie had given her tho day before Will you ride this morningt MrsFalconer It was her husbands voice which interrupted her laughing soliloquy If you please she replied it is a rara morning Then be ready and Tom will have the horses at the door In a half hour he said as ho turned to go down The pretty chestnut maro arched her neck coqucttishly as her new mistress appeared Isabel loved a horse dearly though she had of lato years had little opportunity ofcultivating their acquaintance but she ad red their dainty tnorouguorea ways and could tell a fine horse almost as readily a man I am sure we are going bo be tbe best of friends pretty Dolly she said as she held a lump of sugar in one hand and caressed her especially galling to her sel frcspect and had in addition Bliown a disposition to dictate in tho management of her brothers household a proceeding resented by theexperienced housokcopor who rightly thought that as long ns tho muster was satisfied with her methods Mrs Stanford had nooccasion to interfere Mrs Stan ford was usually too well bred and discreet to disouss family matters with a hireling in any cupacijy but in this case her curiosity got the better of herjudgment and she said in a half whisper as she sank on the drawingroom sofa Pray Mrs Montford what do you think of tho new Mrs Falconer Think of her Mrs Stanford replied Mrs Montford heartily she read curiosity and disappointment in tho tone and took up the defensive at once Why I think shes a bojulady ma am and that your brother Is a lucky man to have found such anexcellent wife Mrs Stanford was confounded She had aid Poor Montford many times since hearing the news and expected to find the housekeeper in a state of jealous illhumor at this sudden invasion upon herlongestablished position She had said Poor Gracie also and Dad made it a part of her plan to take the child back with her to Now York for anindefinite stay as a missionary proceeding to remove her from the atmosphere of the new stepmother Poor Gracie came dancing into the room her cheeks rosy with health herlittle face beaming with happiness and dreBsed with the most perfect taste adecided improvementon Mrs Montfordsrather stiff style of juvenile adornment 11 Oh auntie she cried papa and mamma will be so surprised to see you I Mamma indeed exclaimed MrsStanford inwardly as she drew tho little girl to her embrace So you love this new mamma do you my dear she said aloud Oh yes auntie cried the child She Is such a dear good mamma how could 1 ncipitf And papa loves her too I suppose said Mrs Stanford artfully Why yes I sposeso rephed the little girl he dont say much but he looks at ner Mrs Stanford laughed as she said to her self He can not look at her for the sake of her beauty certainly Meantime the husband and wife w having a delightful ride in a beautiful park with no idea of the arrival in tbeir home Isabel found that her earl v practice in bai back riding was of use to her and after tho first awkwardness of tho mount andstarting was over she sat in her saddle with ease and fearlessness and could guidogentle Doll with scarcely an effort Im not sure that you will need any les sons said Mr Falconer admiringly as he noiea ner erect carriage You Beem to be a natural rideriid with daily practice you will do nicely Doll gallops beautifully when you becomeenough accustomed to tho saddle to try her Isabels cheeks were glowing withexercise as they reached home her hair which tho breeze had blown into a state of fluffy disorder crept out from under her pretty hat in little moist rings upon her forehead and she was smiling huppily at Borne sally of Mr Falconers They lingered a moment in the hall after Tom had taken the horses and MrsStanford had time to brace herself and put on her most aristocratic air before Isabelfollowed by her husband entered the room Mrs Stanfod had made no allowances for the beautifying effects of happiness the change which peace and plenty coming into a starved cramped life can make and she could scarcely believe her eyes when she saw her brothers wife and recognized that homely girl in the tall graceful creature tho once thin face plump and ruddy the eyes heavy with overwork and discouragement now bright and sparkling and shecommented within herself Goodness I I shouldnt have known her My dear Bister 1 said Mr Falconertaking Mrs Stanfords hand in his this isindeed a surprise for we expected a telegram before you arrived Then with as much respect as if presenting a Duchess be said Let me present to you my wife MrsFalconer CHAPTER V Isabel took the offered hand of hersisterinlaw saying with gentle dignityWaicome to our home Mrs Stanford permit me to hope that our acquaintance will prove mutually agreeable Nothing but Mrs Stanfords willingness to find fault in her could have construed tho quiet sentence into any thing improper but that lady with some politely civil reply outwardly thought inwardly Our home Indeed 1 a shopgirl welcoming me to our home with such an air Bhe could not deny to herself that after the awkwardness of tho first meeting wore off tho new mistress did the honors of tho household with graceful dignity and she found herself involuntarily admiring her as she came down attired in an afternoon dress of heavy silk beautifully made and worn with an unconscious nochalance farremoved from the dressed up parvenu air which Mrs Stanford so heartily despised She had come with the benevolent Inten tion of giving her new relative numberless lessons in deportment but she hardly knew where to commence and wisely concluded to defer her instructions She watched every movement fully prepared to criticise though Isabel seemed serenely unconscious of the fact A lady called in the afternoon Mr Falconers At Home cards had met fewresponses the most of the recipients being out of town but Mrs Colonel De Long was an oldtime friend of tbe BalconerB and had made it a point to call while on a flying visit to the city She was the leader of a select circle of Philadelphias best society and upon her depended much of Mrs Falconers social success She was happily one of the frankopenhearted women whom society can not spoil her heart remaining in a state of healthy development in spito of therequirements of fashionable life and Isabel recognized in her a congenial spirit and appeared at her best to Mrs Stanfords surprise for she had looked to see her abashed in the presence of the Btylisb stranger I do believe the girls effrontery wili tarry her through any thing shecommuned with herself as the ladies chatted easily on various topics still she wb seoretly pleased also with the ability of bor new relativo to acquit hersoll bo creditably in such a presence You have reason to congratulateyourself on such a charming accession to your family said Mrs Do Long as Isabolexcused herself for a moment to bring a book of which they had been speaking from the library Wo shall be delighted towelcome ber among us and though MrsStanford received the communication with sense of relieved gratitude she was still In A tremor of anxiety lost it leak out in some unlookedfor manner that Bhe had been one of the despised class among a certain class of aristocrats a shopgirl What do you think of herl Isabel had gone to her room and tho brother and sistei were alone Really Harvey she would be anexceptionally fine woman if it wore not aud Mrs Stanford stopped abruptly For tho terriblo faot that Bhe has ones earned her bread by tbe honest toll of her hands said Mr Falconer finishing hei sentence with a slightly sarcastic smile Now see my dear siBter how differently you and I view this question in my eyei this foot only strongthons my admiration for her and shows me that Bhe is a woman of resourcos and ability Yet you do not proolaim it publicly said Mrs Stanford a little irritably so you see you arO not consistent You will admit however that the faot did not influence my choice ho replied quietly you are onlycone of a lnrge circle who have this foolish prejudice against honest labor Tho fact will be known sooner or later of course but I prefer that Isabel shall have tho opportunity to form certain acquaintances first after which 1 have no idea that the knowledge will harm her in tho least Mrs Colonel De Long seemed charmed with her today said Mrs Stanford re flectlvcly and I must confess 1 never saw any one who dropped moro readily anil easily into luxurious belongings You will find that mere externals ore not all thcro is commendable in Isabel resumed Mr Falconer with a gratified smile and Mrs De Long is just tho woman to find these out and with her friendship hut as tho rustle of Isabels dress was heard on tho staircase no more wu said You have not Inquired for Mrao Arnot Baid Mrs Stanford as Isabel was seated Oracle was in Mrs Montfords room and tho three were together thore was a little maliolous curiosity in theremark to sco how Isabol would take the alluMon to her past life I am not aware that I have any desire to hear from Mme Arnot she replied ooldly she recognized the covert fiin q which sought to bring her former poverty to her mind Why said Mrs Stanford elevating her eyebrows with wellaffected surprise jJecause she is a selfish cruel woman replied Isabel with more heat than she had shown since she had become Mrs Falconer and because bhe has a little power which money gives her sbo rules her workwomen with a rod of iron What that weak pretty little woman said Mrs Stanford incredulously The very same replied Isabelwrathfully Rising fromjtho mostabject poverty herself she has no pity for others who are poor and grinds every ounce of work and humiliation and selfrespect out of her girls that is possible I should like to bear how Lottie and Jennie and the other girls are but 1 do no care to hear of Mme Arnot1 She was complaining bitterly of her Wins when I was in there last said Mrs Stanford ignoring Isabels last remark In the first place you who had always been her favorite her rlphthand assistants how much of that she put on for my benefit I do not know Isabels noso went up scornfully i had left her suddenly Jennie Dewey had gone soon after and the girl you call Lottie was sick Lottie sick dear sweet little Lottie sick interrupted Isabel did she say oi wlrn Her lameness I believe which had be come so painful that Bhe could not getto and from her work Poor little giril She is tho dearest and sweetest lilllo martyr that ever lived cried Isabel pitifully it must bo the fever Bore has broken out again and parents are so poor they need every penny she can earn Tears stood in Isabels eyes and she was scornful no longer Mrs Stanford wont you go and see her when you return Jc well that would be a new rola for me to appear in replied the lady proba bly she lives in some low filthy street really my dear Mrs Falconer that is ask ing too inuoh but Ill tell the district vis itors or sond tho servants If you wish My dear dainty sister said Mr Fal coner who had been a silent listeucr to the conversation with a touch of wholesome disdain in his voice if the Lord of Glory had come on earth in vour time you would decide at once that a manger was altogether too low a place for you to visit Him in and would no doubt send your respects by a servant or district visitor Harry Falconer The lady was really shocked What an idea as if there were any parallel between the two cases Im not an extensive Bible reader but I have a faint recollection of something in it like this Inasmuch as ye have done ft unto the least of these ye have done it unto Me replied Mr Falconer quietly Pardon mo if I seem rude MrsStanford said Isabel but I recall my request Please do not go for Lottie is bo sensitive so quick to read hearts and faces that she would detect a proud or unsympathetic thought at once Have no fears I didnt have the leastintention of going replied Mrs Stanford with a hard little laugh Its quite out of my line but speaking of my return I have a proposition to make What do you say to lending Gracie to me for a few months Lillie is gone and I am very lonely she spoke feelingly now and with a much softer tone Isabel looked inquiringly at her husband who answered promptly Why no Emily we could not think of sparing the child could we Mrs Falconerl Certainly nothing but a desire to oblige Mrs Stanford could be an inducement and we should miss her very much replied Isabel thoughtfully sbo had not realized how the little one bad crept into her heart It would not be at all advisablerejoined Mr Falconer decidedly but hearing Graces light step in the hall we will leave It to ber and see if she wishes to go How Is It Gracie as the child came in and as Isabel held out her arms nestled in her lap putting her arms confidingly about her neck Would you like to go home with Aunt Emily and be her little girl for a time The child looked from one to tho other 3oubtfully and then at her aunt who awaited her answer smilingly If you ploaBe papa I would rather stay with you and mamma she answeredpatting Isabels cheek with her little white hand So you Bhall dear said Mr Falconer In a satisfied tone he had little doubt of her reply when ho put tho quBstion Dont you remomber what a lovely time you had when you were there last year said Mrs Stanford coaxlngly the rides in Central Park and all the other nice things you enjoyed so much Yes auntiereplied tho child readily but I didnt have mamma then Mrs Stanford bit her lip in annoyance What was the charm about this plainunassuming woman which brought her buoq love and respectl she asked herselfimpatiently and the answer would have been apparent had she not been so blinded by pride and prejudice that she would not see Shall we spend tbe evening in the home room said Isabel to her husband Inquiringly Mrs Stnnford had stepped out upon a small balcony ostensibly to look at a stand of flowers thore really toreoover from her voxation which her native good sense told her was unladylike anduncalled for No he rephed decidedly not until our family wheels have an application of the oil of kindness and love and he looked Bignillcantly at the form on thebalcony we want no jarring or discordance tfiere Is there any thing I can say or do Mr Falconerl in a low pained voice No my dear wife he had never called ber that before and she looked up at him gratefully Only be patient and natural Emily is not showing her better self and I am sure a little patience and forbearance will bring itoutall right Mrs Stanford even then was struggling with herself having tho grace to bs ashamed of her petulance I know I should love tier with tho rest Bhe said to herself if she had been one of our own rank in society but and that little but was Bnough to embitter all her thoughts Mrs Stanford had two sides to hercharacter one a solflsh and worldly side with an overwhelming respcot for what Vtey would say or do the other aobarmingly friendly and kindly one which few could resist This better self was struggling for preeminence as she absently looked into the depths of a pure calla lily Oh papa lets ride out to Falrmount this evening said Gracie as MrsStanford came rustling in with a happior shade upon her handsmo face Auntie has not Been the new si atuary True my little girl that is a happysuggestion said Mr Falconer if auntie would like to go It would certainly be a very pleasant way of spending the evening saidMrsStanford graciously she had Bensiblydetermined that there should bo no morefriction for that evening at least and MrFalconer wentatonce toordcr tho horses Tho cool evening air after the heat of the lay and the beauty of tho drive insensibly calmed Mrs Stanfords ruffled feelings and brought out her better self and she was particularly chatty and agreeable toIsabels rciief who responded at once to her mood Gracie delighted in riding and expressed the happiness of her little heart by a flow of childish conversation as she nestled close by Isabels side laying her cheek lovingly against the soft velvet and chenille of her wrap and occasionally looking in her face with a smile of satisfaction Mrs Stanford was not alow toobsorye these sims of affection and happily Bhe was inspired by them to a desire to do her brothers wife justice at least if no more The next morning cshe arose with adetermination to be kind toward the young bostesB and she succeeded so well that she was unexpectedly agreeable She wassitting In the drawingroom when Isabelentered from a visit to Mrs Montfords room That good woman had divined the state of affairs intuitively and her sympathies were with the young wife and she oould notresist the temptation of saying with asignificant nod Dont you let her browbeat you onoparticle Mrs Falconer and Isabel hadreplied smilingly with a little pat of tho good womans motherly shoulder Dont be alarmed Mrs Montford on my account Grade tells me you have been having some new drosses made Mrs Stanford was saying pleasantly I must confess to a weakness for liking to see prettycosHumes and in obodienco to tho bintIsabel led the way to her room and theremainder of the morning was spent In looking over tho new wa flrobe anddiscussing styles If you will allow me to compliment you said Mrs Stanford as she inspected the garnet velvet with the eye of anexport I must say you have shown the most perfect taste in your selections She had half expected to Bee a gaudy display such a mistake as might easily havo been made by a less pure taste Isabel received the commendation with a flush of pleasure she was anxious to be friendly with this haughty sisterinlaw though she did not intend to cringe orsacrifice a shade of ber selfrespect lo gain her friendship and it was pleasant to hear a compliment from her even upon thesecondary topic of dress It Is the first time I havo ever had the opportunity of pleasing myself withoutregard to expense she replied quietly and doubtless my taste will improve withopportunity and culture I dont see how It can said the other with candor I havent told you of Lillys wedding gifts have II Bhe continued with a mothers pride in her only daughters marriage festivities I shall be delighted to hear said Isabel cordially I admire Mra Norton so much and am in such haste to make heracquaintance The balm was soothing to tho mothers heart and she replied cordially also with a little laugh The admiration is mutual then for Lilly quit raves over you that picture which you and Harvey sent quite captivated her and it is a beauty it takes a front rank in her list of gifts and then followed a description of the wedding and trousseau which occupied the remainder of the morning In the afternoon more callers came in Mrs Harry Dwight among them another prominent lady in the circle which Isabel was expected to enter She had tired of Newport she said and had come home to rest she was a bright captivating little body and Like a bracing breeze cheered and cleared the atmosphere wherever she went Society had quit failed to spoil her and she carried her warm heart where nature had placed it in direct communication with her bright busy brain and her deeds of charity andkindness will perhaps never bo estimated until she meets them again in that hereafter where even the kindly word and modest oup of oold water are not forgotten We Bhall have such a delightful oppor tunity to get acquainted before the season commences she said brightly If I only knew how to knit I would put on a black Bilk apron and come over and bring my knitting as grandmamma used to do but in lieu of knitting please lay aside formality and come in without ceremony said Isabel gracefully meeting her callers cordiality Mrs Stanford was more than ever impressed with her new sistersability to make her way In society and she was in a very amiable frame of mind as evening drew near which fact Mr Falconerobserved with pleasure Wo will spend the evening in the home room he said to Isabel in a low voice as they passed out of the diningroom Very well she said looking up with a happy smile I have to speak to Mra Montford a moment And will join you there 41 This Is our Bnuggery where wo keep the altar fires of home burning said Mr Falconer as he threw open the door and ushered his Bister in It was a revelation to her and she looked about her Insurprise as well Bhe might for there was nothing in her elegant homo whichcompared with it for beauty and purity ofdesign It is Isabels work said Mr Falooner She and Gracie planned it all Even to the portrait said MrsStanford inquiringly as she paused before tbe picture in surprise She had imagined fair Matties face banished from the new wifes presence That was her thought also and acomplete surprise with the rest I surrender Harvey The sister turned with tears in ber eyes toward her brother and placed her hand upon his armaffeotionatly She had a tender heart though as we have seen it was surrounded with heavy crust of worldlmess You havo i deed found a treasure among women ana together we will fight her battles if need be before tho world The remainder of Mrs Stanfords visit was very pleasant and sho scorned striving to atone for her first unkindness If there is any thing in which I can bo of assistance to you she said the following morning as they were Bitting in the library She spoke with a little hesitation she did not wish to be patronizing but she was bo accustomed to being so that she feared to blunder into it unconsciously I am ignorant on some points I will oon fess replied Isabel frankly There ara oertain forms aud ceremonies in society in whicfc I have hitherto had no need to cducato this is oub bnuqgeht myself the folding of a card and such minutla of etiquette for instance MrFalconers education had also been neglected on such points I observe Yes indeed laughed Mrs Stanford Harvey cares no more for such small etiquettes than ns if they did not exist and then followed n condensed compendium of fashionable forms Be sure you spend Christmas with us was Mrs Stanfords last words before the carriage drovo away Lilly and Ralph will be home and we Bhall rely on you also Well my dear said Mr Stanford as he camo home and found his wife in her usual place at the dinner table what of that terrible ereatnre your brothers wife Morton sho replied and she meant every word fully Mrs Harvey Falconer is remarkable woman To be continued Stolen by Mice In Mr Davins Irishmen in Canada is told a very good bear and mouse story which is better than the averageinvention in that line A Bettler had gone into the bueh and worked one season be foro bringing his family to their new home Huving built his house and cleared some land he thought of returning for his wife and children He had with other money 150 Insilver This on account of its weight he determined not to take with him but to hide it in the hollow of a tree He put it in a stocking and hung it up in aholLjw trimjc When the settler and his family came home tho next summer they found that an old bear had mado the house his abode during the winter and on going to the tree for his money the man was not a little disappointed to find it gonel His mind hovered round his money and he haunted the tree At last hedetermined to cut it down At the base hope revived when he saw portions of the paper and the stocking cut up fine forming together with grass and leaves a wood mouses nest Beneath the nest was the 150 in the midst of mold and rotten wood Building aud Loan Associations The vast majority of city dwellers rent their houses and never have a permanent home This constitutes a Bort ofrespectable vagabondage including ourreputable people of the middle classes The need of this sort of life is of late coming under discussion That it involves vast waste aud loss and is seriouulydetrimental to family character is beyondquestion Building and loan associations have grown into prominence as a remedy and the Bubject should be consideratelystudied by all men of moderate means Mrs Sanbury of the Social Scienceassociation estimates the number of such associations at present at nearly 5000 with an investment of 300000000 while the savings during tbe forty years past have been over 500000000 Thero are 000 associations in Ohio 450 inLUinois 52 in Michigan and other states in proportion St Louis GlobeDemocrat yspepsia Makes tho lives of many peoplo miserable and in Lifa By Mrs F M Howard Copyrighted issa CHAP T Ell IV Tho new garments came homo in duo time and it Is not lo be denied that their ownor tried them on with a thrill ofgratified pleasure she loved rich and beautiful things and she enjoyed the glimpse in the glass of the welldressed rejection oftarself This Is exceedingly beoomtngBaid Mrs Gould tho shopwoman before mentioned who had been sent with the dresseH to make any needed alterations it was a rich garnet velvet made up with just enoughsparkling iridescent trimming to relieve itsplainnesB and that real lace set is just the thing to wear with it Auother an airy black lace looped up in every available spot with tiny gold atari which gleamed in and out like fireflies You must wear natural flowers in crimson with this said Mrs Gould eitherrosebuds or fuchsias A rich white brocadesatin combined with creamy lace was the next and Isabel was as near being a beauty in it as she would ever be Purple pansies shall be my flowers when 1 wear this Bhe said half in soliloquy as she stood by the glass while skillful Mrs Gould took out a stitch here and there in tbe drapery and looped it more artistically Yes Mrs Falconer she replied there is a harmony between the sweet pure flowers and whito which all do notrecognize to my mind there is nothing so purely elegant in dress as white lace and this creamy Bluff is of such a delicate pattern The riding habit came also and fitted beautifully Isabel bad a fine form and carriage and was capable of greatimprovement under the transforming touch of dress and the dark navy blue of her habit was very becoming ns well as tbe hat with its long drooping feather which reached nearly to her shoulder and mingledgracefully with her curls which she worehabitually now as Mr Falconer liked to see tbem A suitable length Of time in which to dress is a luxury iu itself said Isabel as she stood before her mirror brushing her hair and recalled Mme Amots where the tired girls were obliged to be on duty at such an hour under aJl circumstances I think dear madam if you are expecting to see me behind your counter again in one year or ever again you are doomed todisappointment and she laughed a lowhappy little laugh as she pinned back ber curls with a Bilver arrow which Gracie had given her tho day before Will you ride this morningt MrsFalconer It was her husbands voice which interrupted her laughing soliloquy If you please she replied it is a rara morning Then be ready and Tom will have the horses at the door In a half hour he said as ho turned to go down The pretty chestnut maro arched her neck coqucttishly as her new mistress appeared Isabel loved a horse dearly though she had of lato years had little opportunity ofcultivating their acquaintance but she ad red their dainty tnorouguorea ways and could tell a fine horse almost as readily a man I am sure we are going bo be tbe best of friends pretty Dolly she said as she held a lump of sugar in one hand and caressed her glossy coat with her other Dolly thus propitiated turned her large liquid eyes upon her mistress with a look of almost human intelligence crunching me sugar m her strong whito teeth Thoridera had been fronebutaiewmomenis when a carriage came uo the drive BIobs me if it isnt Mrs Stanford said Mrs Montford in a flutter aB she hurriedly smoothed her hair and went forward to meet the visitor That good lady had resolved upon a strategic move thinking that if she could Burpriso tho onomy she would have a better opportunity to judge of its resources so she had sent no intimation or ner arrival Her keon oyea wore on the alert toobserve any tokens of unwelcome obangeB or MBS MONTFOKD MET DEH IN TUB HALL Innovations as Mra Montford mother Is tho halL Mr and Mrs Falconer novo just goni horseback riding Bho Bald as MrsStanford met ho r greeting with an inquiring look Mrs Montford was not an ardent admire of Mrs Stanford thrJ lady hud alwaysassumed an air of lofty patronage toward her especially galling to her sel frcspect and had in addition Bliown a disposition to dictate in tho management of her brothers household a proceeding resented by theexperienced housokcopor who rightly thought that as long ns tho muster was satisfied with her methods Mrs Stanford had nooccasion to interfere Mrs Stan ford was usually too well bred and discreet to disouss family matters with a hireling in any cupacijy but in this case her curiosity got the better of herjudgment and she said in a half whisper as she sank on the drawingroom sofa Pray Mrs Montford what do you think of tho new Mrs Falconer Think of her Mrs Stanford replied Mrs Montford heartily she read curiosity and disappointment in tho tone and took up the defensive at once Why I think shes a bojulady ma am and that your brother Is a lucky man to have found such anexcellent wife Mrs Stanford was confounded She had aid Poor Montford many times since hearing the news and expected to find the housekeeper in a state of jealous illhumor at this sudden invasion upon herlongestablished position She had said Poor Gracie also and Dad made it a part of her plan to take the child back with her to Now York for anindefinite stay as a missionary proceeding to remove her from the atmosphere of the new stepmother Poor Gracie came dancing into the room her cheeks rosy with health herlittle face beaming with happiness and dreBsed with the most perfect taste adecided improvementon Mrs Montfordsrather stiff style of juvenile adornment 11 Oh auntie she cried papa and mamma will be so surprised to see you I Mamma indeed exclaimed MrsStanford inwardly as she drew tho little girl to her embrace So you love this new mamma do you my dear she said aloud Oh yes auntie cried the child She Is such a dear good mamma how could 1 ncipitf And papa loves her too I suppose said Mrs Stanford artfully Why yes I sposeso rephed the little girl he dont say much but he looks at ner Mrs Stanford laughed as she said to her self He can not look at her for the sake of her beauty certainly Meantime the husband and wife w having a delightful ride in a beautiful park with no idea of the arrival in tbeir home Isabel found that her earl v practice in bai back riding was of use to her and after tho first awkwardness of tho mount andstarting was over she sat in her saddle with ease and fearlessness and could guidogentle Doll with scarcely an effort Im not sure that you will need any les sons said Mr Falconer admiringly as he noiea ner erect carriage You Beem to be a natural rideriid with daily practice you will do nicely Doll gallops beautifully when you becomeenough accustomed to tho saddle to try her Isabels cheeks were glowing withexercise as they reached home her hair which tho breeze had blown into a state of fluffy disorder crept out from under her pretty hat in little moist rings upon her forehead and she was smiling huppily at Borne sally of Mr Falconers They lingered a moment in the hall after Tom had taken the horses and MrsStanford had time to brace herself and put on her most aristocratic air before Isabelfollowed by her husband entered the room Mrs Stanfod had made no allowances for the beautifying effects of happiness the change which peace and plenty coming into a starved cramped life can make and she could scarcely believe her eyes when she saw her brothers wife and recognized that homely girl in the tall graceful creature tho once thin face plump and ruddy the eyes heavy with overwork and discouragement now bright and sparkling and shecommented within herself Goodness I I shouldnt have known her My dear Bister 1 said Mr Falconertaking Mrs Stanfords hand in his this isindeed a surprise for we expected a telegram before you arrived Then with as much respect as if presenting a Duchess be said Let me present to you my wife MrsFalconer CHAPTER V Isabel took the offered hand of hersisterinlaw saying with gentle dignityWaicome to our home Mrs Stanford permit me to hope that our acquaintance will prove mutually agreeable Nothing but Mrs Stanfords willingness to find fault in her could have construed tho quiet sentence into any thing improper but that lady with some politely civil reply outwardly thought inwardly Our home Indeed 1 a shopgirl welcoming me to our home with such an air Bhe could not deny to herself that after the awkwardness of tho first meeting wore off tho new mistress did the honors of tho household with graceful dignity and she found herself involuntarily admiring her as she came down attired in an afternoon dress of heavy silk beautifully made and worn with an unconscious nochalance farremoved from the dressed up parvenu air which Mrs Stanford so heartily despised She had come with the benevolent Inten tion of giving her new relative numberless lessons in deportment but she hardly knew where to commence and wisely concluded to defer her instructions She watched every movement fully prepared to criticise though Isabel seemed serenely unconscious of the fact A lady called in the afternoon Mr Falconers At Home cards had met fewresponses the most of the recipients being out of town but Mrs Colonel De Long was an oldtime friend of tbe BalconerB and had made it a point to call while on a flying visit to the city She was the leader of a select circle of Philadelphias best society and upon her depended much of Mrs Falconers social success She was happily one of the frankopenhearted women whom society can not spoil her heart remaining in a state of healthy development in spito of therequirements of fashionable life and Isabel recognized in her a congenial spirit and appeared at her best to Mrs Stanfords surprise for she had looked to see her abashed in the presence of the Btylisb stranger I do believe the girls effrontery wili tarry her through any thing shecommuned with herself as the ladies chatted easily on various topics still she wb seoretly pleased also with the ability of bor new relativo to acquit hersoll bo creditably in such a presence You have reason to congratulateyourself on such a charming accession to your family said Mrs Do Long as Isabolexcused herself for a moment to bring a book of which they had been speaking from the library Wo shall be delighted towelcome ber among us and though MrsStanford received the communication with sense of relieved gratitude she was still In A tremor of anxiety lost it leak out in some unlookedfor manner that Bhe had been one of the despised class among a certain class of aristocrats a shopgirl What do you think of herl Isabel had gone to her room and tho brother and sistei were alone Really Harvey she would be anexceptionally fine woman if it wore not aud Mrs Stanford stopped abruptly For tho terriblo faot that Bhe has ones earned her bread by tbe honest toll of her hands said Mr Falconer finishing hei sentence with a slightly sarcastic smile Now see my dear siBter how differently you and I view this question in my eyei this foot only strongthons my admiration for her and shows me that Bhe is a woman of resourcos and ability Yet you do not proolaim it publicly said Mrs Stanford a little irritably so you see you arO not consistent You will admit however that the faot did not influence my choice ho replied quietly you are onlycone of a lnrge circle who have this foolish prejudice against honest labor Tho fact will be known sooner or later of course but I prefer that Isabel shall have tho opportunity to form certain acquaintances first after which 1 have no idea that the knowledge will harm her in tho least Mrs Colonel De Long seemed charmed with her today said Mrs Stanford re flectlvcly and I must confess 1 never saw any one who dropped moro readily anil easily into luxurious belongings You will find that mere externals ore not all thcro is commendable in Isabel resumed Mr Falconer with a gratified smile and Mrs De Long is just tho woman to find these out and with her friendship hut as tho rustle of Isabels dress was heard on tho staircase no more wu said You have not Inquired for Mrao Arnot Baid Mrs Stanford as Isabel was seated Oracle was in Mrs Montfords room and tho three were together thore was a little maliolous curiosity in theremark to sco how Isabol would take the alluMon to her past life I am not aware that I have any desire to hear from Mme Arnot she replied ooldly she recognized the covert fiin q which sought to bring her former poverty to her mind Why said Mrs Stanford elevating her eyebrows with wellaffected surprise jJecause she is a selfish cruel woman replied Isabel with more heat than she had shown since she had become Mrs Falconer and because bhe has a little power which money gives her sbo rules her workwomen with a rod of iron What that weak pretty little woman said Mrs Stanford incredulously The very same replied Isabelwrathfully Rising fromjtho mostabject poverty herself she has no pity for others who are poor and grinds every ounce of work and humiliation and selfrespect out of her girls that is possible I should like to bear how Lottie and Jennie and the other girls are but 1 do no care to hear of Mme Arnot1 She was complaining bitterly of her Wins when I was in there last said Mrs Stanford ignoring Isabels last remark In the first place you who had always been her favorite her rlphthand assistants how much of that she put on for my benefit I do not know Isabels noso went up scornfully i had left her suddenly Jennie Dewey had gone soon after and the girl you call Lottie was sick Lottie sick dear sweet little Lottie sick interrupted Isabel did she say oi wlrn Her lameness I believe which had be come so painful that Bhe could not getto and from her work Poor little giril She is tho dearest and sweetest lilllo martyr that ever lived cried Isabel pitifully it must bo the fever Bore has broken out again and parents are so poor they need every penny she can earn Tears stood in Isabels eyes and she was scornful no longer Mrs Stanford wont you go and see her when you return Jc well that would be a new rola for me to appear in replied the lady proba bly she lives in some low filthy street really my dear Mrs Falconer that is ask ing too inuoh but Ill tell the district vis itors or sond tho servants If you wish My dear dainty sister said Mr Fal coner who had been a silent listeucr to the conversation with a touch of wholesome disdain in his voice if the Lord of Glory had come on earth in vour time you would decide at once that a manger was altogether too low a place for you to visit Him in and would no doubt send your respects by a servant or district visitor Harry Falconer The lady was really shocked What an idea as if there were any parallel between the two cases Im not an extensive Bible reader but I have a faint recollection of something in it like this Inasmuch as ye have done ft unto the least of these ye have done it unto Me replied Mr Falconer quietly Pardon mo if I seem rude MrsStanford said Isabel but I recall my request Please do not go for Lottie is bo sensitive so quick to read hearts and faces that she would detect a proud or unsympathetic thought at once Have no fears I didnt have the leastintention of going replied Mrs Stanford with a hard little laugh Its quite out of my line but speaking of my return I have a proposition to make What do you say to lending Gracie to me for a few months Lillie is gone and I am very lonely she spoke feelingly now and with a much softer tone Isabel looked inquiringly at her husband who answered promptly Why no Emily we could not think of sparing the child could we Mrs Falconerl Certainly nothing but a desire to oblige Mrs Stanford could be an inducement and we should miss her very much replied Isabel thoughtfully sbo had not realized how the little one bad crept into her heart It would not be at all advisablerejoined Mr Falconer decidedly but hearing Graces light step in the hall we will leave It to ber and see if she wishes to go How Is It Gracie as the child came in and as Isabel held out her arms nestled in her lap putting her arms confidingly about her neck Would you like to go home with Aunt Emily and be her little girl for a time The child looked from one to tho other 3oubtfully and then at her aunt who awaited her answer smilingly If you ploaBe papa I would rather stay with you and mamma she answeredpatting Isabels cheek with her little white hand So you Bhall dear said Mr Falconer In a satisfied tone he had little doubt of her reply when ho put tho quBstion Dont you remomber what a lovely time you had when you were there last year said Mrs Stanford coaxlngly the rides in Central Park and all the other nice things you enjoyed so much Yes auntiereplied tho child readily but I didnt have mamma then Mrs Stanford bit her lip in annoyance What was the charm about this plainunassuming woman which brought her buoq love and respectl she asked herselfimpatiently and the answer would have been apparent had she not been so blinded by pride and prejudice that she would not see Shall we spend tbe evening in the home room said Isabel to her husband Inquiringly Mrs Stnnford had stepped out upon a small balcony ostensibly to look at a stand of flowers thore really toreoover from her voxation which her native good sense told her was unladylike anduncalled for No he rephed decidedly not until our family wheels have an application of the oil of kindness and love and he looked Bignillcantly at the form on thebalcony we want no jarring or discordance tfiere Is there any thing I can say or do Mr Falconerl in a low pained voice No my dear wife he had never called ber that before and she looked up at him gratefully Only be patient and natural Emily is not showing her better self and I am sure a little patience and forbearance will bring itoutall right Mrs Stanford even then was struggling with herself having tho grace to bs ashamed of her petulance I know I should love tier with tho rest Bhe said to herself if she had been one of our own rank in society but and that little but was Bnough to embitter all her thoughts Mrs Stanford had two sides to hercharacter one a solflsh and worldly side with an overwhelming respcot for what Vtey would say or do the other aobarmingly friendly and kindly one which few could resist This better self was struggling for preeminence as she absently looked into the depths of a pure calla lily Oh papa lets ride out to Falrmount this evening said Gracie as MrsStanford came rustling in with a happior shade upon her handsmo face Auntie has not Been the new si atuary True my little girl that is a happysuggestion said Mr Falconer if auntie would like to go It would certainly be a very pleasant way of spending the evening saidMrsStanford graciously she had Bensiblydetermined that there should bo no morefriction for that evening at least and MrFalconer wentatonce toordcr tho horses Tho cool evening air after the heat of the lay and the beauty of tho drive insensibly calmed Mrs Stanfords ruffled feelings and brought out her better self and she was particularly chatty and agreeable toIsabels rciief who responded at once to her mood Gracie delighted in riding and expressed the happiness of her little heart by a flow of childish conversation as she nestled close by Isabels side laying her cheek lovingly against the soft velvet and chenille of her wrap and occasionally looking in her face with a smile of satisfaction Mrs Stanford was not alow toobsorye these sims of affection and happily Bhe was inspired by them to a desire to do her brothers wife justice at least if no more The next morning cshe arose with adetermination to be kind toward the young bostesB and she succeeded so well that she was unexpectedly agreeable She wassitting In the drawingroom when Isabelentered from a visit to Mrs Montfords room That good woman had divined the state of affairs intuitively and her sympathies were with the young wife and she oould notresist the temptation of saying with asignificant nod Dont you let her browbeat you onoparticle Mrs Falconer and Isabel hadreplied smilingly with a little pat of tho good womans motherly shoulder Dont be alarmed Mrs Montford on my account Grade tells me you have been having some new drosses made Mrs Stanford was saying pleasantly I must confess to a weakness for liking to see prettycosHumes and in obodienco to tho bintIsabel led the way to her room and theremainder of the morning was spent In looking over tho new wa flrobe anddiscussing styles If you will allow me to compliment you said Mrs Stanford as she inspected the garnet velvet with the eye of anexport I must say you have shown the most perfect taste in your selections She had half expected to Bee a gaudy display such a mistake as might easily havo been made by a less pure taste Isabel received the commendation with a flush of pleasure she was anxious to be friendly with this haughty sisterinlaw though she did not intend to cringe orsacrifice a shade of ber selfrespect lo gain her friendship and it was pleasant to hear a compliment from her even upon thesecondary topic of dress It Is the first time I havo ever had the opportunity of pleasing myself withoutregard to expense she replied quietly and doubtless my taste will improve withopportunity and culture I dont see how It can said the other with candor I havent told you of Lillys wedding gifts have II Bhe continued with a mothers pride in her only daughters marriage festivities I shall be delighted to hear said Isabel cordially I admire Mra Norton so much and am in such haste to make heracquaintance The balm was soothing to tho mothers heart and she replied cordially also with a little laugh The admiration is mutual then for Lilly quit raves over you that picture which you and Harvey sent quite captivated her and it is a beauty it takes a front rank in her list of gifts and then followed a description of the wedding and trousseau which occupied the remainder of the morning In the afternoon more callers came in Mrs Harry Dwight among them another prominent lady in the circle which Isabel was expected to enter She had tired of Newport she said and had come home to rest she was a bright captivating little body and Like a bracing breeze cheered and cleared the atmosphere wherever she went Society had quit failed to spoil her and she carried her warm heart where nature had placed it in direct communication with her bright busy brain and her deeds of charity andkindness will perhaps never bo estimated until she meets them again in that hereafter where even the kindly word and modest oup of oold water are not forgotten We Bhall have such a delightful oppor tunity to get acquainted before the season commences she said brightly If I only knew how to knit I would put on a black Bilk apron and come over and bring my knitting as grandmamma used to do but in lieu of knitting please lay aside formality and come in without ceremony said Isabel gracefully meeting her callers cordiality Mrs Stanford was more than ever impressed with her new sistersability to make her way In society and she was in a very amiable frame of mind as evening drew near which fact Mr Falconerobserved with pleasure Wo will spend the evening in the home room he said to Isabel in a low voice as they passed out of the diningroom Very well she said looking up with a happy smile I have to speak to Mra Montford a moment And will join you there 41 This Is our Bnuggery where wo keep the altar fires of home burning said Mr Falconer as he threw open the door and ushered his Bister in It was a revelation to her and she looked about her Insurprise as well Bhe might for there was nothing in her elegant homo whichcompared with it for beauty and purity ofdesign It is Isabels work said Mr Falooner She and Gracie planned it all Even to the portrait said MrsStanford inquiringly as she paused before tbe picture in surprise She had imagined fair Matties face banished from the new wifes presence That was her thought also and acomplete surprise with the rest I surrender Harvey The sister turned with tears in ber eyes toward her brother and placed her hand upon his armaffeotionatly She had a tender heart though as we have seen it was surrounded with heavy crust of worldlmess You havo i deed found a treasure among women ana together we will fight her battles if need be before tho world The remainder of Mrs Stanfords visit was very pleasant and sho scorned striving to atone for her first unkindness If there is any thing in which I can bo of assistance to you she said the following morning as they were Bitting in the library She spoke with a little hesitation she did not wish to be patronizing but she was bo accustomed to being so that she feared to blunder into it unconsciously I am ignorant on some points I will oon fess replied Isabel frankly There ara oertain forms aud ceremonies in society in whicfc I have hitherto had no need to cducato this is oub bnuqgeht myself the folding of a card and such minutla of etiquette for instance MrFalconers education had also been neglected on such points I observe Yes indeed laughed Mrs Stanford Harvey cares no more for such small etiquettes than ns if they did not exist and then followed n condensed compendium of fashionable forms Be sure you spend Christmas with us was Mrs Stanfords last words before the carriage drovo away Lilly and Ralph will be home and we Bhall rely on you also Well my dear said Mr Stanford as he camo home and found his wife in her usual place at the dinner table what of that terrible ereatnre your brothers wife Morton sho replied and she meant every word fully Mrs Harvey Falconer is remarkable woman To be continued Stolen by Mice In Mr Davins Irishmen in Canada is told a very good bear and mouse story which is better than the averageinvention in that line A Bettler had gone into the bueh and worked one season be foro bringing his family to their new home Huving built his house and cleared some land he thought of returning for his wife and children He had with other money 150 Insilver This on account of its weight he determined not to take with him but to hide it in the hollow of a tree He put it in a stocking and hung it up in aholLjw trimjc When the settler and his family came home tho next summer they found that an old bear had mado the house his abode during the winter and on going to the tree for his money the man was not a little disappointed to find it gonel His mind hovered round his money and he haunted the tree At last hedetermined to cut it down At the base hope revived when he saw portions of the paper and the stocking cut up fine forming together with grass and leaves a wood mouses nest Beneath the nest was the 150 in the midst of mold and rotten wood Building aud Loan Associations The vast majority of city dwellers rent their houses and never have a permanent home This constitutes a Bort ofrespectable vagabondage including ourreputable people of the middle classes The need of this sort of life is of late coming under discussion That it involves vast waste aud loss and is seriouulydetrimental to family character is beyondquestion Building and loan associations have grown into prominence as a remedy and the Bubject should be consideratelystudied by all men of moderate means Mrs Sanbury of the Social Scienceassociation estimates the number of such associations at present at nearly 5000 with an investment of 300000000 while the savings during tbe forty years past have been over 500000000 Thero are 000 associations in Ohio 450 inLUinois 52 in Michigan and other states in proportion St Louis GlobeDemocrat yspepsia Makes tho lives of many peoplo miserable and
