4 Pablo Picasso, drawing after cast of the Parthenon 'Dionysus' location unknown 3 J. A. D. Ingres, drawing after cast of a classical head, 1789 formerly Henry Lapauze Collection of them are itemized in the well-known 1656 inventory of his effects made in preparation for the sale held to satisfy his creditors. A handful of Rembrandt's mature drawings after casts have been identified, but none of his youthful ones have been discovered. If early ones turn up one day, they probably will not differ much from the study made bv Ingres after a classical head (fig. 3) at age nine, or the drawing Picasso made at twelve of a cast of a figure from the Parthenon (fig. 4). They will be precise studies of the effect of light and shadows on form. With the benefit of historical hindsight we can discern premonitions of mature modes and moods in the juvenilia of Ingres and Picasso. One wonders if drawings done bv voung Rembrandt at the same early stage would provide similar indications. Van Swanenburgh, the specialist in architectural views, probably helped Rembrandt master the rudiments of perspective. The most popular handbooks on this important subject during Rembrandt's day were those published by Vredeman de Vries. It is reasonable to assume that Van Swanenburgh had some of Vredeman de Vries' volumes in his studio, for the plates in them were useful for the young pupil trying to resolve complicated perspective problems such as the one posed by a spiral staircase (fig. 5). Rembrandt's masterful drawing of an interior (fig. 7) made in the earlv 1630s which represents a spiral staircase with a few swift strokes of the pen and some bold washes shows how brilliantly Rembrandt learned his lesson. Perspective handbooks of the period must also be counted among the sources for the fantastic architectural 124
