hasconducted vigorous workouts this week On Monday night thefinmen did 100 lengths of the pool and on Tuesday afternoon 72 All of this work however is not directed at Case With final exams coming on Monday the mermen will need all of the conditioning that they can muster for their February schedule which includes three meets inside of eight days All fortunately are in Crane Pool where the swimmers will enjoy some advantage over theopposition In the meet at Cleveland Bibler plans to use his freshmen and sophomores primarily in order that they may gain moreexperience in meet competition Of course the regulars John and Loren Day backstroker Stu Smith Bob Huenefeld Pete Michel and diver Dave Robinson will be there but it will be the show primarily of the freshmen and sophomores An interesting sidelight to this weeks practice has been theinnovation of wearing a sweat shirt while swimming This method was used successfully by the American Olympic swimmers last year in Australia The only bad thing about this method is that itsupposedly hurts the timing of the stroke The Case times will give a clear indication of the value of this method for future workouts BASKETBALL Clill Stevensons JV basketball team will try its hand against the class basketball teamsSaturday night in Warner Gym The contest will feature four quarters each 20 minutes long with each of the four teams Senior Junior Sophomore and Freshman playing one quarter The game will start at 745 pm Host Wittenbergs Big Cagers Paced by Highscoring Deems The powerful Wittenberg Tigers invade Oberlin for one of the most important basketball games of the season The Tigers and the Yeomen are both undefeated in OhioConference play and currently share the top spot along with Akron Last year Wittenberg finished third in the conference with an 113 record The Tigers were scheduled to play at Oberlin but due to traveling difficulties the game was can celed This year Wittenberg has threatened to run away from the rest of the league They have blasted five conference opponents in convincing style Mt Union 6853 Wooster 9859 Otterbein 5643 Ohio Wesleyan 7350 and Capital 6649 Eastern Trip The Tigers also made an Eastern trip during the winter vacation They won two out of three games beating Iona and LIU and losing a decision to St Peters 544 Wittenberg has height andexperience Two starters are 67 tall and four of the regulars arereturnees from last years fine squad The big threat in the Tigerattack is their great junior forward Terry Deems Last year the 64 Deems had a 204 scoring average He tallied 46 points in theWooster game to break the Wittenberg single game individual record In addition to his prolific scoring Deems averaged over 20 rebounds a game At the end of the season he was an AllConference choice and even received LittleAllAmerican Honorable Mention This year Deems has picked up where he left off He has ascoring average of 188 points a game and has snared 17 rebounds per contest In addition to DeemsWittenberg has their 67 twinssophomore Tony Wilcox and freshman George Jfisher Wilcox hasdeveloped rapidly and is second to Deems in scoring with a 142average Playmakcr The playmaker on the team is sophomore guard Tony Vedova His backcourt partner Bernie Thompson is a deadly outside shot Thompson who averaged 13 points a game last year uses a unique overthehead set shot and also is effective with a lefthanded jump shot Oberlin will start with the same five that played against Heidelberg and Kenyon Ace Gilchrist and Ron Jacobs will be at forward Bob Gutmann at center
