Fencers Show Promise in Match By JOHN DONALDSON Fighting one of their top meets of the season the Yeoman fencing squad crushed Case Tech with victories in all weapons winning by a score of 17 to 10 As in earlier matches this season sabre and epee competition started first However this time the two squads weredetermined not to depend on foil to make up an early deficit The sabremen won handily weapon captain Ken Cheek and Shelley Miller bothwinning three bouts Freshman John Ken worthy replaced Knut Aagaard who dropped the first sabre bout of the day and fought well in winning his first varsity bout 53 He also dropped a close bout in his other chance 54 The sabre squad in general fenced well scoring clean decisive touches The vigor with which they fought attested to their determination to win The epee squad which has been having a rough season defeated the Engineer epeemen 54Weapon captain Hugh Tucker and Gene Thursby each won two of three while freshman Ben Pool was able to take only one of his three matches losing another by a 54 score Case Coach Overconfident Just prior to the final epee match Coach Freed of Case was overheard talking to one of his epeemen telling him that if he could win the final epee bout he Freed was confident that the Engineer foilmen could whip the Oberlin foil squad 72 Since Case at the time was on the short end of an 116 score this would have meant a victory for themHowever it turned out that the team from Cleveland won neither the final epee bout nor the foilcompetition nor the meet The Yeoman foilers thoughoutdone by the sabremen were not overcome by the tough Case squad Capital Rips Yeomen WithHotSecondHalfl Jacobs Leads Crimson Scoring Against Tight Lutheran Press By JON MARGOLIS The Oberlin basketball team after fighting through a close first half finally succumbed to a strong CapitalUniversity team by a score of 9367 Capital completely outplayed the Yeomen in the second half scoring a total of 53 points to Oberlins meager 28 The game started off at a fast and close pace The lead seesawed back and forth a number of times throughout the first half with the Yeomen usual ly holding a slight edge At one point the Oberlin lead was eight points Toward the end of the first half the Capital five went into a tight press on defense in anattempt to stifle the Crimsonoffensive drive But the Lutheran strategy was foiled by the one thing nostrategist can control the referees As the Yeomen tried to drive through the Capital defense the officials became strict and called fouls on the defenders Even though they suffered because of the fouls the Lutherans kept up the press for much of the game At the end of the half Capital led by a score of 4039 But in the second half theFighting Lutherans broke the game wide open With their star Ray Emcke scoring 21 of his 36 points in the closing stanza Capital went far ahead in the first minutes of the half and the Yeoman cagers were never again a threat All but one of Emckes 21 points were field goals On the local side Ron Jacobs was again the high scorernetting an even 20 points for theevening Jack Coniam was next with 16 The total Oberlin tally of 67 would have been enough in most ball games but the Yeomandefense just couldnt stop Emcke and company The basketball teams record now stands at nine and seven with three games left The team travels to Western Reserve tonight and to Ashland on Thursday A home game with Wooster Saturday night rounds out the season Foil action was started by Ed Topsy Turvey who notched the thirteenth win of the day If this bout was any indication next year Turvey will have an excellent chance to be the best fencer on the squad along with sabremen Miller and Twitch Watkins Following Turvey was team captain Bill Vaile who quickly clinched the Oberlin victory Once again Vaile fenced excellently during the meet going undefeated in three bouts In his final bout he administered only the third defeat of the season to the first man on the Engineer foil squad trouncing him 51 Alhough the Case man fought hard he was thoroughly outclassed by Vaile Also fencing for the Yeomen were foil captain Dick Mendes who went winless for the day and substitute foiler John Donaldson who replaced Turvey after the victory was assured Donaldson added one bout to the win column while losing one Coach Mike Golejewski stated The team fenced enthusiastically and with great purposefulness against a strong team It was plainly visible that all had one aim victory This victory was the greatest success of this years fencing The team attained the goal I had always thought of all three teams were victorious He commended the members of the squad for their outstandingindividual performances and noted The future members of the team also fought well Freshmen Ben Pool of the epee team and John Kenworthy of the sabre team In closing he mentioned the meet against Western ReserveUniversity this week and warned There is an adage in fencing no fencer should underestimate hisopponent Meet Reserve Thursday The teams record is now seven wins and four losses with one meet remaining The final match of the year is against WesternReserve 8 pm Thursday night in Warner Gym Seniors of the squad for whom this will be the last meet are Vaile Mendes Cheek Tucker and Dave Taggart Earlier this season Oberlin defeatedReserve 207
