THURSDAY OCTOBER 4 1990 P 4 THE DENISOMAN Death by Administration By Mike Ward Finance CoEditor In 1971 the Denison campus was dry In other words Denison did not allow alcohol on campus In 1971 a student died in a drinking and driving related accident In 1971 the Denison administration adopted a wet drinking policy And they say history is our greatest teacher In the spring of 1988 1 saw my first Denison University drinking policy get passed Now as a senior our campus like in 1971 is almost dry Freshmen are not allowed to have alcohol in the dorms the opencontainer policy is still in effect and has been broadened to encompass every inch of the campus kegs are not allowed anywhere and the police have free and unconditioned roam of the University It isnt that drinking is that important or even that getting by the restrictions is that hard to do nowadays Hell an all freshmen dorm found a way to obtain over 500 worth of hard alcohol on one random weekend The problem occurs when someone dies Just like the early 70s when Denison students were forced to find an escape offcampus instead of close to homesomeone died Someone will die again Strong statement I would hope so The problem as I see it is that no one in the administration wants to face this reality Death is too strong a subject and judging from the comments by those up above death should be avoided in mixed company It seems they would rather hide behind lame justifications such as the new Ohio drinking laws and liability costs Well Ill give you coststhe cost of a students life who drives off campus to drink The unfortunate truth is at the rate were going a student will die in a drinking and driving accident The ironic part is that the organizations that for years have done more to keep students out of cars and on their feet than any other at Denison namely the fraternities are the ones taking the brunt of the administrations efforts to restrict drinking Sure fraternities are exclusive and restrictive to some independentsso get rid of the guest lists not the ability of the fraternity system to provide a much needed service here on campus Is it a wonder we have more cars on campus this year than any other It shouldnt be As a 21 yearold senior Ive spent more time at Casa Lupita than I have on campus I need a car Its understandable though The administration has like most bureaucracies the ability to pass legislation without sticking around to see the effects of their actions They dont realize that more people frequent Casa Lupita followed by the Granville Inn followed by the Buxton followed by the Granvilla than ever before due in part to the administations new policies You would think theyd be concerned but in all likelihood those in the administration who count wont even read this article Well when someone dies maybe theyll take a look They say that history is our greatest teacher Awareness is Essential By Jane Milbourn CoEditorinChief It seems that we have an epidemic of awareness Within the past few school years we have had Black History Month Womens History Month and even Walk Awareness Week There was also one somewhere in there about fitness or eating disorders too I think Several weeks from now well celebrate the everpopular Alcohol Awareness Week And this week is AIDS Awareness Week Stay tuned for Denison Security Awareness Week and Granville Police Department Appreciation Week One might think that after all of these events and opportunities for increasing awareness about issues that are important in our lives today that we may become immune to these special events especially on issues which we hear about day in and day out such as alcohol and AIDS This editorial in itself may be pushing the issue of overemphasis but Ill take that risk I cannot spew out facts about how many people have AIDS or when they got it or even how many have died from it but I can and will stress the importance of being aware of the dangers and how to avoid it We are taught again and again not to have sex without a condom not to share needles with intravenous drug users etc And these are all extremely important for everyone to know It may seem old and boring but do you really know the truth If you are not a fact finder and you feel satisfied with your knowledge then there is still plenty for you to take part in during AIDS Awareness Week Every student at this school should at least take five minutes to stop by Swasey and see the AIDS Quilt If you are moved in some way at the sight then the whole week of awareness was successful in my opinion Convocations are the same way even if you dont attend many convos if youre going to pick one or two for the year you should or should have pick one or both of these Tuesday nights convo featured a panel of persons who actually have the disease know someone who has it or know someone who died as a result of it A friend recendy pointed out to me the fact that we couldnt even be sure that all of these panelists would be alive by the time the convo took place to take part in the discussion Stopped me in my tracks for a minute I have to admit that it seemed a little strange to walk out of Slayter and have someone standing there reading names from behind a podium In fact a friend of mine who will remain nameless turned to me and asked What do I do if they read my name I was a little surprised but responded that they were all names of people who had died of AIDS I dont think that she believed me at first The shock is overwhelming that list seemed to go on forever I wonder if in ten years when they have their annual AIDS Awareness Week at Denison I will know anyone on that list Realistically I should probably be wondering how many I will know Its a frightening prospect This is not a special interest awareness week not to lessen the credibility of any of the other events such as this but something that every single one of us will undoubtedly be affected by during the course of our lives This isnt your average everyday weekyou need to take part in AIDS Awareness Week Thanks A special thanks to Craig DiGiaSio fron the editors for tis dedication YithoEt Craig there would be co Campus
