Friday March 2 THE OBERLIN REVIEW Page 2 1956 Oberlin ftebteto Published by the students of Oberlin College every Tuesday and Friday during the winter and spring semesters excepting holidays and examination periods Subscription 5 for the full year 3 a semester ten cents a copy Entered as second class matter at the Oberlin Ohio post office April 12 1911 Office 60 South Pleasant Street Telephone 44271 MARY P1ETSCH EDIT0R Bob Service BusineM RAY BACH 1SSUE EDI Republican Outlook At his press conference Wednesday President Dwight D Eisenhower stated that he would be available for theRepublican presidential nomination In his subsequentbroadcast he explained that he wanted to be sure that the people knew all the issues involved in botn his nomination for and his election to the presidency The President said that he had consulted a great number of friends and acquaintances before coming to a decision but he strongly emphasized that in the finalanalysis the decision was his alone Political opponents willundoubtedly contend that Eisenhower was pressured intorunning for reelection Be this as it may his statement Wednesday night seemed sincere and forthright It ishighly improbable that many in his audience read hypocrisy into his address Judging from this from the reactions of Republican politicians across the nation and from the fact that Eisenhower appears to have gained in popularityduring the last four years his nomination seems virtuallyassured Uncertain Factors As for winning the election however severalunknowns cloud the picture It is still uncertain just how the voters will react to a candidate who is as the President put it classed as a recovered patient Eisenhower explained that he would remain under constant medical supervision This would eliminate certain activities and limit others The President emphasized however that he had no doubt that he could carry on the important duties of thepresidency The basic responsibilities of policy he said could never be escaped whether the President were on vacation or not It is these responsibilities that the President feels he is completely capable of handling Whether or not the voters will agree with him is uncertain At the time of his illness there was strong opinion that he would not be an effective candidate The vicepresidential candidate will undoubtedly be the subject of long and careful consideration Traditionally the vice president is a compromise candidate to appeaseopponents of the Presidential nominee and to unify the party Demand Consideration The urge to continue this tradition will be strong but if the Republican politicians do not realize theimportance of Eisenhowers running mate the Democraticpoliticians certainly will Richard Nixon is certainly the most obvious choice although the President has declined to give his support to any vicepresidential candidate on the grounds that this is a job done by the Convention after the nomination of the president Nixon is well liked in some areas but he does not enjoy the universal support that Eisenhower does There is more than a slight possibility that Eisenhower supporters especially the independents who proved so important in the last election will bepresented with a presidential candidate that they like and a vicepresidential candidate that they do not like This could prove to be a significant disadvantage to the Republican cause Another disadvantage may be that of the Presidents decision not to engage in an active whistlestop campaign Although he claimed that this decision was made before his illness it will now be easier to carry it out The President claims he wishes to conduct the campaign on the record of his administration This is the only area where theDemocrats can hope to meet him successfully For even AdlaiStevenson who now seems to have the most popular Democratic support cannot match the great personal appeal of Mr Eisenhower What I have to say about De siree can be summed up in a very few words dont bother to see it However for those of you who want to And out foryourselves I am dutybound theres an editor of uncertain mien breathing down my neck to do something along evaluative lines Our dour Calliope brought it to town last year so the following will be a kind of reappraisal for those of you who arent speaking to roommates and have no friends Not very agonizing though That comes Friday night Desiree plays Friday night and no other Thank God Well its about this Napoleon fellow Seems he was too busy with making history to make time with Jean Simmons who wisps in and out of his life looking pensive and somewhat dyspeptic I was going to mine that last sentence for a little collegetype humor that editor again See me at Federal and Ill let you in on the joke Better atmosphere dont cha know Brando himself manages to look completely insignificant though to be fair hes rather outclassed by CinemaScope and Deluxe color I think the shoes he wore pinched but since they were borrowed from what the release quaintly called a contemporary collection of Napoleonia they probably hadnt been saddle soaped in a hundred and fifty years His pants are also rather small though I doubt that the same reasons apply Anyhow he speaks hisabominable dialogue in a sibilant voice that reminded me of pigeonsconversing at four in the morning on top the roof of the grain store The set on which the climactic scene is rendered read rent is the most cliched Ive ever seen I wouldnt have it in mygreatuncles burlesque house Incidentally if you want to make a hit inhistory 2 class just adoptHollywoods version of Waterloo Dont be surprised if Mr McGill turns into a rampant Wellington though Well there are quite a few blondes hanging about The Culver City regulars as we used to call them hang quite nicely in the allover picture I know thats poor Forever Darling is a Desilu production meaning that it is the issue of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Another argument for birthcontrol Arnaz and Ball are no Lunt and Fontanne and this entertainment is singularly inane I cant begin to describe the plot its not a wellmade play if that interests you One interestingfeature is that James Mason plays a guardian angel quite a switch no matter how you look at it I had the impression that he wanted desperately to throw stink bombs and that just might have saved the picture It plays Saturday through Mon day and lasts 114 minutes Count em If Its Edible Its Gettable There was a man in our town And he was wondrous wise He jumped into a briary bush And scratched out both his eyes But then he heard of GIBSONS And he was wiser still He scratched his eyes both in again So he could have the thrill Of going down to Gibsons To see the luscious cakes Made to rich perfection The way that GIBSON bakes Drop in at GIBSONS anytime And see the sage old rake Who feasts his eyes and then himself On GIBSONS chocolate cake Bont Forget Our Ice Cream Department will soon be sporting article is the first of a scries written hy Chairmen of various Mock Conventiondelegations and pressure groupspresenting their views on current national and political issues As the American MedicalAssociation is an organization much maligned in the minds of many of the more liberal groups so many of which are found here at Oberlin as well as in other intellectual centers we of the American Medical Association pressure group of the MockConvention would like to state and support our more conservative views We believe basically in the principle of free enterprise with government intervention only when it is fairly certain that free enterprise cannot do the job better Our opponents claim that the state of the nations health is now so critical that it is time for the government to step in and provide some sort ofnational compulsory health insurance This claim was first strongly emphasized in 1945 whenPresident Truman made his proposal for a compulsory federal health insurance to be administered along the lines of socialsecurity This plan and subsequent ones never succeeded insecuring the requisite Congressional approval Since that timeanother solution to the problem has become evident There has been a tremendous expansion of voluntary health insurance plans There are now it isestimated 105 million people or 63 per cent of the population who have some sort of coverage This may be contrasted with the 30 million covered in 1945 toappreciate the advances madeCoverage in many plans is notadequate at the present time but expansions in coverage are being made economically as a result of competition between insurance companies We presume that this expansion will continue Another criticism of voluntary plans is that many simplycannot afford them Surveys show that families earning under 2000 a year cannot buy any insurance One must be aware in using statistics such as these that economic factors vary greatly in each section of the country In this low income group are many farmers who obtain most of their living needs from the farm Real income is greater than money income and insurance is not out of thequestion Nevertheless other groups in the low income class are more subject to disease because of malnutrition poor sanitation etc These people would be helped by compulsory insurance Yet the basic problem in their care would not be solved It is on this campus Yes you heard me a real live honesttogoodness Lssue acontroversy Not only is this anissue it will also provide anopportunity for student action The issue is this bicycles should not be stolen Many of us will jump to the defense of one side or the other There will be those who argue that anyone with sense should lock hisbicycle and that an unlocked bike can only invite the passerby to steal Therefore in order toprotect our weaker members from indulging in their passion for stealing we must put ball and chain around the ankles of our transportation After all what adult in his right mind would leave an automobile unlocked and with the keys in theignition Who would go on vacation without first locking up his house People who persist in such careless habits deserve to be robbed The arguments that willappeal to most of us however are those fired back by the other side Whether or not weourselves indulge in bicyclestealing we must admit that wecannot condone larceny eitherpetty or grand When 50 worth of property disappears we can only marvel at our fellow student What makes the bicycle thief different from the rest of us Is his psychology quite so different from ours While the rest of us are content to be a bit late to classes or to dinner what is it that gives the other fellow leave to reap where he has not sown Perhaps it is the philosophy of the thief that needs explanation For pragmatic considerations he finds it wise and expedient to ride off on anothers bicycle After all the end justifies the means doesnt it Thekleptomaniacs conception of the social order is that the world is in an irrevocable state of nature he will be the fittest and willtherefore survive For the moment he no longer cares what the world thinks of him He is as was Telemachus
