tmriav October 26 1956 THE OBERLIN REVIEW jW To Challenge Harriers Present Powerful Obstacle By JERRY LEHMANN Tomorrow the Yellow Jackets of BaldwinWallaceCollege will again invade the campus this time to try their hand at crosscountrying Led by the Hamilton brothers both former state high school mile champions the Brown and Gold boast a team that lavs claim to Deing second strongest in the state Last years Bereamen ended a longfrustrates wait as their track teamdefeated Ohio State 72 K to 54 Only Miami was better However the Yellow Jackets in seven attempts have yet to beat the local harriers Last year the teams met in the allOhio the Crimson winning with 23 points to the Jackets 65 The Bereamen have not lost anyone from the distance crew of last spring and will run Jim Barnewal and Bob Stahley the last a 4 23 miler who did not run last falli in addition to the Hamilton threat Local mentor Dan Kinsey who has expressed concern since all my runners are injured with the exception of Bob Service islooking for a close meet but a win Duel for First Bob Service looks for another duel for first position with the leading BW runners cither the Hamiltons or Barnewall The rest of the Yeoman lineup will await the verdicts on the multitude of injuries but it looks like Leroy Lamborn who led the varsity around the course Wednesday Dave Lyons Ty Olsen and Bob Takarh will be out to redeem themselves this week Other possible starters may be Walt Knecht Kail DeLongMunro Meyers burg Bob MacLaren Leon Lewis John Grigg RogLivingston or Don Wheeler Lewis and Grigg both made great improvements inWednesdays trials to place them incontention for varsity berths Jayvee Runs Again Sometime next week the junior varsity will again defend its long winning streak against a varsity team this time hosting Akron University Captain Don Wheeler will lead the JVVrs with whatever is left over from the varsity dozen The Zips are not expected to be too tough as they have dropped an 1843 decision to MuskingumCollege but should present more team balance than Hiram did Byron Akron U Defeats Jayvee Griddcrs On a damp and soggy Dillfootball field the Crimson jayveefootball team met a far superiorfootball team from Akron University The fault did not however lie with the local squad Akron having called before the game to inquire as to whether they could bring a few members of the varsity squad along so that they would have enough men to play brought practically all of their men up to their first string Needless to say they won The score was 260 The Yeomen won the toss and elected to receive They could not though duplicate their last game against BaldwinWallace when they took the opening kickoff and rackedup four consecutive first downs while marching to atouchdown They found the slanted four man line defense thrown up by the Zips too much After three futile line plays they were forced to punt Akron took the ball andpromptly rolled to the Crimson end zone for a touchdown The extra point was kicked and the score stood at 70 The Zips scored twice more in the second period and kicked one of the extra points sothebalftime score was 200 in favor of Akron The Yeomen fared little better in the third period Far outweighed man to man at every position they could do little more than try to hold the powerful Zips frommaking a runaway of the contest The men from Akron scored once in the third period but Mike Goldhamer blocked the try for the extra point so the score stood at 260 and that was the way the game ended There may not be any more games for the junior varsity team to play unless they can arrange a game with Ashland or some other school in the vicinity Sturm Jerry Frient and Tom Buxler will lead the way for the Blue and Gold team from therubber capital Page S Sailors Place 1st 5th in Regattas To Sail at Ohio State The local sailing club defeated the College of Wooster in a dual meet by 11 points The Yeomen took five first places threesecond places and one third place in nine races Debbie Brown Peggy Hiller Judy Fuess HankLengnick Dave Townes and Buzz Jobes skippered for the locals The sailors also tied for fifth place in the University ofMichigan Fall InvitationalIntersectional Regatta Dave Dobbins Sue Walker Ann Budlong and Ted Ford skippered for the Crimson while Frank Parsons and Jean Hallberg crewed Ohio Wesleyan won the regatta and the other six participating schools finished in the following order the University ofWisconsin second Michigan StateUniversity third the University of Michigan fourth Oberlin and compete atChicago in the Timme AngstenMemorial Regatta On Nov 3 and 4 the women members of the Sailing Club will travel to Ohio Wesleyan for the womens championships where they will be strong contenders for top honors Booters To Meet Alumni All Stars Taking a well earned breakafter last Saturdays excellent game with Kenyon College the varsity soccer team returned to itsstrenuous practice Scrimmages and wind sprints head the agenda for the remainder of the week One of the scrimmages is slated against the Alumni AllStars this Friday The game will feature many old time favorites from past Yeoman soccer squads and should provide some good entertainment for both the spectators and the squads So far this season the Booters are undefeated winning three games by a very narrow margin Somehow goals are hard to get this season Last year the locals got more goals in their first game than they have scored so far this year The defense on the other hand has allowed only an average of tie with one game to go 3rd East Wilder led by captain John Adams the leagues leading scorer with 39 points and 2nd West Wilder sparked by ace quarterback Jack Williams are tied at 40 and meet Monday with the title at stake Moving into the finals on the strength of a bye 2nd Wilder fields a team that uses a passing attack as a first line of offense rather than a change of pace Williams accurate aerials to ends Bill Stein and RichKhanlian have accounted for most of the touchdowns Besides this pair however 2nd Wilder sends out three other men to receive one goal a game Coach Cliff Stevenson will be working with the line constantly trying to get a better scoring punch before the next game against Akron University Nov 3 Luckily a long time remainsbecause Akron has an excellentdefense sparked by their acrobatic Brazilian goalie The game will be held Saturday night under the light at Akron The schedule for the rest of the season is a very busy one for the Booters They will play theirremaining five games in only two weeks time against some very tough teams Denison who was an easy victim for the Yeomen last year hasimproved tremendously They have managed to collect 25 goals in their first three games Furthermore they tied Slippery Rock State Teachers College who in turnalmost defeated the locals Other games will be against Ohio Wesleyan University who tied the Yeomen last season and against the always dangerous Ohio State University team Another much improved soccer team is the Junior Varsity squad Although they were beaten 10 by the University School ofCleveland they showed good promise for the future and usually breaks at least one man free with an intricate pass pattern The men from 2nd West depend on their height to catch most passes Despite the running heroics of Adams and Rudman the key to the Wilder mens success is a hard fast welldrilled line Besidesbeing demons on defense thequintet of Bob Fitch Tom Queen George Sidero Murray Cowan and Ed Garvin have not permitted the opposition to advance pastWilders 20 yard line This line will probably be the key in thechampionship game with 3rd East Wilder favored over 2nd West Wilder because of its stronger line and greater running speed Another interesting fight is shaping up in the Soph league 1st West Burton is undefeated Barrows has not lost any of its in four games while 3rd South three games The Burton men won 126 on two touchdowns by Don Dupont and the squad from Barrows advanced on a bye After Barrows makes up its Here does OKLAHOMA over NOTRE DAME Tilings wed like to see PENN STATE over
