Department Holds Symposium on Ribera By BARBARA BRYAN Miss Chloe Hamilton Prof Wolfgang Stechow and Mr Richard Buck conducted a symposium on the paintings of Jusepe de Ribera late Renaissance Spanish artistyesterday in Allen Art Museum Miss Hamilton Curator of the Museum explained how the exhibit of Ribera paintings was planned The idea be gan with the purchase of the Blind Old Beggar in 1955 she related Then the departmentbegan investigating sources todetermine the possibilities ofborrowing other Ribera originals So far as the Museum staff knows this is the first allRiberaexhibition made in this country Miss Hamilton stated All the paintings obtained are from Americancollections Stechow Summarizes Style Professor Stechow gave asummary of the stylistic development of Ribera Although he settled in Naples at a very early ageRibera remained a Spaniard because of the considerable Spanishelement in Naples at the time Inaddition Spain as well as the rest of Europe had been stronglyinfluenced by Michelangelo andCaravaggio Professor Stechow stated Ribera shows this influence by his directness of religiousexpression and by dwelling upon thesubjects of asceticism and saintlysuffering Riberas early style is characterized by a tenebroso feeling and contrasting of dark shadows This is exemplified by the Blind Old Beggar and other paintings dated in the 1630s observed Professor Stechow Greater Use of Light In the 40s he evolved a much greater use of light and bright colors as is shown by the red robes of the St Jerome and the St John the Baptist The Madonnas show even more color and light In 1652 the year of his deathRibera painted a St Bartholomew which seems to indicate a return Spanish Department Names Cuban to Post The College Faculty Council in a meeting it does conserve much of the lighter elements of hisintermediate stage said Professor Stechow Buck Discusses Restoration Mr Richard Buck Conservator of the InterMuseumConservation Commission a groupcomposed of the College museum and nine other museums spoke on the problems of conservation andrestoration of old paintings Toillustrate an almostperfectlyconserved painting he showed alandscape by Meindert Hobbema 16381709 one of the mostvaluable Museum possessionsExplaining how the esthetic idea isdistorted by age flaking abrasions and restorers additions Mr Buck pointed out evidence of suchdetails in the Riberas Xrays Show Additions He showed Xrays of the Blind Old Beggar revealing slightadditions in a few spots In general this painting is in good condition while one of RiberasMadonnas seems a little too retouched he said Comparing the red robes of the St John and the St Jerome he noted that the St John has darker shadows which are prob ably restorers additions The earlier St Bartholomew seems to have suffered most from the dis tortions of age he pointed out Mr Buck emphasized thatdamage to paintings must be accepted and can neither be too much criti cized nor should beoverconcealed However the condition of a painting should decide the price he added NUMBER 36 eu une auuiuonai memDer jjean Stewart stated Neither thephilosophy nor religion departments he said have named the additional member The choice of anassistant professor by the mathematics department is pending approval by the Board of Trustees The Trustees have approved the addition to the Spanishdepartment of Mr Julio R Casteneda a native of Cuba now in Spain working on his doctorate as afulltime member for next year toreplace Mr Donald Ferber who has been teaching Spanish this year in addition to courses in the French department Mr Ferber will teach only French next year Dean Stewart said that theCollege Faculty Council each year hears requests from individual College departments foradditional faculty members Funds for the present additions he said arealready incorporated in the budget for next year Adding that the faculty also drops instructors Dean Stewart stated that the Council attempts in granting departmental requests to adjust to demands of different fields as they change Last year he said three members wereadded to the faculty two in English and one in German j i
