Description |
"Of all our 'orphanages' the most picturesque is our 'Old Ladies Home'. These horrible old beggars who live in rags---cripples, filthy, helpless castaways---who have come and begged to be 'orphans'. It's a wonder they've lived thru the hard times---most of them I guess had a little something which they've cherished, till now 'tis exhausted. They have a real fine Mairig [affectionate term for Mother, or 'Little Mother'] who has wrought marvelous transformations with soap and cloth. Even the bedridden have walked to the office to get the goods for a new dress---a treasure they never hoped to possess again." Frances C. MacDaniels, letter to her parents, ? 1919, Series 9.
